Drake, Houston Lead Ravens To 3rd Straight Win

November 8, 2022 3:47 am

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Kenyan Drake rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, Justin Houston had an interception to go with his third straight multiple-sack game, and the Baltimore Ravens beat the New Orleans Saints 27-13. Lamar Jackson passed for a touchdown and frustrated New Orleans with his mobility, rushing for 82 yards and exhibiting an array of jump cuts and spin moves. Baltimore won its third straight and remained atop the AFC North at 6-3, one game ahead of Cincinnati. The Saints fell to 3-6 and were outclassed by a Baltimore team missing several offensive starters. The Ravens converted 9 of 15 third downs.

Colts Fire Coach Frank Reich

November 8, 2022 3:43 am

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indianapolis Colts have hired former All-Pro center Jeff Saturday as interim coach after firing coach Frank Reich. The move came after another lackluster offensive performance in the team’s third consecutive loss. The Colts announced the moves one day after an ugly 26-3 loss at New England. Reich was hired in 2018 after serving as offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles. He led the Colts to the playoffs in two of his first four seasons. Saturday’s only coaching experience came at a Georgia high school. He’s served as a team consultant and an ESPN commentator most recently.

Pihakis, known everywhere by his “Buns” nickname, was a three-time PIAA wrestling champion for Canonsburg, graduating in 1952. He lost just one of his 100 career matches and competed in Olympic tryouts in 1952 and 1956. Wash-Jeff Tops Grove City

November 6, 2022 1:22 am

Sophomore quarterback Jake Pugh hit 21-of-35 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns, leading Washington & Jefferson past Grove City, 31-14, Saturday afternoon. Freshmen wideouts John Peduzzi and Ian Hansen each had over 100 receiving yards, the first time that’s happened in more than three years.  Peduzzi scored on 23 and 10 yard receptions. Hansen snared a 16-yard scoring passes. Pugh’s other touchdown was on a six-yard grab by sophomore fullback Zach Cernuto. W&J rolled up 423 total yards but squandered two early scoring opportunities both inside the Grove City ‘red zone,” one a missed field goal and the other a tip-ball interception. Peduzzi’s first TD reception capped the third W&J possession, giving the Presidents a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. Grove City answered with a nine-minute, 16-play drive to tie the score on a one-yard run from Clayton Parrish. Dylan Wyandt kicked a career-long 38 yard field goal to put W&J back in front, the Adam Rudzinski covered a loose ball on an option pitch, setting the Presidents up at the Wolverines’ 16-yard line. Hansen scored on the first play to set the halftime score at 17-7. After the break, Tyler Sabo’s third interception of the year gave W&J the ball at the Grove City 26. Two plays later, Pugh found Cernuto unguarded for the six-yard score. Puduzzi’s 10-yard scoring catch pushed the W&J lead to 31-7 late in the third quarter. Joey Guida set the final with a 20-yard touchdown run for the Wolverines.  Guida finished with 17 carries for 112 yards. W&J improves to 7-2 with next week’s regular season finale at Waynesburg. Grove City drops to 6-3 and will host Thiel next week.

November 6, 2022 7:34 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Brandon Tanev scored the game-winning goal with 3:39 remaining and the Seattle Kraken beat Pittsburgh 3-2, sending the Penguins to their seventh straight loss. Tanev took a pass from Yanni Gourde and beat goaltender Tristan Jarry from point-blank range to snap a 2-all tie. It was Tanev’s first goal of the season and it came against the team he played for from 2019-21. The Kraken won their fourth straight, the longest streak for the second-year franchise. Seattle has five wins in its last six games. Vince Dunn and Gourde also had goals for the Kraken. Martin Jones stopped 36 shots after shutting out Minnesota in Seattle’s previous game. The Penguins got goals from Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel. Crosby also had his 900th career assist.

Astros Win World Series

November 6, 2022 7:33 am

HOUSTON (AP) — Yordan Alvarez hit a towering three-run homer and the Houston Astros clinched their second World Series title in six seasons with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6. That also gave 73-year-old manager Dusty Baker his first title in 25 seasons as a manager, the last three in Houston. This was Houston’s second championship. The Astros also won in 2017, a title tarnished by their sign-stealing scandal. Alvarez’s home run in the sixth inning put Houston ahead 3-1. Astros rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña was the World Series MVP. The 25-year-old star born in the Dominican Republic also was MVP of the AL Championship Series. Houston starter Framer Valdez won his second game in this World Series.
