Washington County baseball and softball teams swept their PIAA first-round playoff games Monday, while the two Greene County softball squads hit the end of the road. Fort Cherry baseball, Chartiers-Houston & Bentworth softball all posted shutout wins. The Rangers scored the game’s only run three batters in as Colton Temple singled home Landon Trnavsky, then made it stand up to advance to the state quarterfinals for the first time in 40 years, winning at Everett, the District 5 champion. Everett loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but could not push the tying run across the plate. Chartiers-Houston softball followed with their 20th all-time first round state playoff victory. Sydney English bunted home one run in the fourth, Aubree Randolph singled home the other run in the fifth, and Taryne Drilak crafted a complete-game three-hit shutout as the Bucs knocked off the District 6 champion Bellwood-Antis. Bentworth’s win over Wilmington was much less dramatic as the Bearcats rode a Sydney Gonglik perfect game to a six-inning run-rule win over the District 10 runner-up. Sites and times for Thursday’s quarterfinals will be released Tuesday morning. We’re planning to carry all three games on the WJPA Sports Network. Watch/Listen Here

The deal to send two-time AP Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from Cleveland to the Los Angeles Rams puts him in company with several other great players who have been traded away in the NFL. The deal for Garrett came about nine months after another stunner involving a star pass rusher with Micah Parsons being dealt from Dallas to Green Bay just before the start of last season. Garrett wasn’t the only star player traded Monday, with Philadelphia dealing receiver A.J. Brown to New England for a 2028 first-round pick and 2027 fifth-rounder.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jake Mangum went 3 for 4 with his first homer of the season and a go-ahead RBI single after the Pirates blew a six-run lead as Pittsburgh held off the Minnesota Twins 10-9 on Saturday. Mangum went deep against Bailey Ober (6-3) in the second inning for the fourth home run of his career. Gregory Soto got the final four outs for his seventh save. Yohan Ramirez (3-2) earned the win in relief after starter Mitch Keller couldn’t hold an early 7-1 lead. Kody Clemens had three of Minnesota’s 12 hits. Josh Bell drove in three runs for the Twins, who have lost five of six. Ober’s three-game winning streak came to an abrupt end. The right-hander allowed a season-high eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits. Ober has given up seven homers over his last three starts. Pittsburgh second baseman Brandon Lowe was ejected for the first time in his nine-year career. The two-time All-Star, whose 14 homers lead the team, was tossed by first base umpire Jordan Baker after flying out to left in the fourth inning.
