PIAA Championships, Giant Center Notes: WPIAL AAA only won one title last year, seven in 2009. Wiecioch's title is his second (2010-AA at Charleroi) along with a runner-up finish in 2011. McGuire's championship is just the second all-time for Upper St. Clair (Tom Bogan, 1995). Like Wiercioch, McGuire was a silver medalist last year. McCutcheon & Hills each won their first PIAA gold medals after finishing fifth and third repsectively last season. Hills' win over Hart was one point better than the WPIAL Finals a week ago (5-2). Franklin Regional's medalists are three freshmen and a sophomore. Krivus won five straight consolation bouts to take third after an opening-round 3-1 overtime loss to Zach Ulerick. Krivus beat Ulerick 3-1 in the consolation semifinals. Lydic's pin in the 5th-place match at 145 pounds was the only fall for a WPIAL medalist in Saturday's final session. Wisener's win gave Washington County 17 total medalists (AA & AAA combined) including all eight qualifiers from Canon-McMillan. The Big Macs won their second-straight team points title, outdistancing Central Dauphin, 102-67. Saturday, Mar. 10--AA Medalists from WPIAL Notes: Gulibon's title is his fourth, first two in Triple-A, last two in Double-A. He is the tenth four-time PIAA wrestling champion, the first since McGuffey's Jeremy Hunter completed his run 16 years ago. (full list below) Mizia's championship, a 3-2 win over Cody Law (Forest Hills), avenges a 4-2 loss in the SW Region semifinals a week ago. Mizia won three other bouts by two points to make the finals. His title is just the third for a Washington County AA wrestler since the last Bearcat PIAA champion, CJ Wonsettler, won in 2002--Cody Wiercioch (Charleroi-2010) and Dan Conley (Burgettstown-2008) were the others. PIAA Individual Notes PIAA Four-Time Champions 1. James Conklin, Waynesburg (1940-1943) 2. Jerry Maurey, Clearfield (1947-1950) 3. Mike Johnson, Lock Haven (1958-1961) 4. Friday, Mar. 9--AAA Quarterfinals AAA Second Round Consolations Friday, Mar. 9--AA Quarterfinals AA Second Round Consolations Thursday, Mar. 8--AAA First Rounds Just as impressive, wins in 13 of the 15 consolation bouts kept 40 of 42 WPIAL AAA wrestlers alive for PIAA medals. Only Blake Caudill (Butler) and John Kyriacopoulos (Upper St. Clair) have been eliminated. Thursday, Mar. 8--AA First Rounds A much better run through the first-round consolations for WPIAL AA wrestlers, winning 14 of the 25 elimination bouts. Nine of those winners are from Washington/Greene Counties, including three from Chartiers-Houston, three from Charleroi, and one each from Avella, Burgettstown and Fort Cherry. Let's Get Out There and Wrestle! Thursday, March 1st, at WJPA Radio, just hours before Mark Uriah & Greg Warnock started their coverage of the WPIAL AAA Wrestling Championships, we quietly marked our 70th anniversary. We did that rather quietly, not with a lot of chest-pounding or other hoopla and fanfare, rather by doing what we've been doing since the station went on the air at 3 pm, March 1, 1942--broadcasting into people's homes, cars, offices, and now computers and smartphones, the things happening at home and across the country. We've been providing news and information, sports and entertainment for nearly as long as the PIAA has conducted these wrestling championships. And, for nearly 60 years, the nation's very best wrestling has been heard, start to finish, on the airwaves of WJPA Radio. As has been the case for more nearly two decades now, all of our coverage--WPIAL & PIAA, Team & Individual--has been available on-air and on-line, thanks to our partnerships with the MSA Sports Network, EZ-Stream and the PIAA. Over the years, WJPA has been trusted by listeners to bring home the action of the Pennsylvania's best wrestling. We've been true to that trust in the past and we have no plans of letting you down now. We hope you'll check back often as we move through the 75th PIAA Tournament this week. Our award-winning broadcast crew will bring home the action, starting with move-by-move descriptions of the Washington/Green County wrestlers (our hometown kids), then turn an eye to the rest of the WPIAL and, as opportunities allow, the other bouts going on. While many things have changed since that March afternoon back in 1942, one thing that hasn't is that our crew will still give you every score of every bout all weekend long. Enjoy the action!
