Washington School District Hosts Veterans Day Program

Students at Washington Junior-Senior High School had the opportunity Friday to pay tribute to veterans and their service. An assembly honoring those who served featured patriotic music pieces from the band and chorus and a featured speaker. This year’s speaker was former army captain. Kevin Ola. Ola related his military story from his admission to Gannon University and their ROTC program to his training sites in the United States and his ultimate deployment to Iraq. Ola was a military intelligence officer that embedded with the Iraqi Army as part of a military transition team in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his discharge from the army, Ola located to Avella. He served as an officer in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard serving as the intelligence officer for all national guard during the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh in 2009. Ola is currently employed by the Department of Homeland Security working as a Transportation Security Inspector. Ola wanted to impress upon students that military service is not all combat related. He spoke of his experience in military intelligence as one avenue available to students who wish to serve.
