NEW DELHI (AP) — The death toll from a stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu, India, has reached 40. The state’s health minister said Sunday that medics are treating at least 124 injured people in hospitals. The rally was held for Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, a popular actor and politician known as Vijay. Tens of thousands gathered in Karur on Saturday to hear him speak. Witnesses said the crowd became too large to control, leading to the tragedy. Vijay expressed his condolences, calling the incident deeply saddening. The government has announced a probe, and the chief minister has promised compensation to the victims’ families. (Photo: AP)
