A single shot was fired late in the high school football game at South Allegheny High School’s stadium. Liberty Borough Police Officers, as well as others from South Allegheny School Police and security officers responded to the scene right before 11 p.m. at the stadium’s entrance. Athletes, coaches, staffers, students, children and others fled the area. According to a social media post from the Liberty Borough Police, school police officers encountered a 17-year-old suspect and took him into custody. That’s when they found a loaded, semi-automatic handgun in his waistband. They disarmed the suspect, who was described as a high school student at Brashear in Pittsburgh, and rendered the gun safe. The gun was later identified as one that was stolen from Wilkins Township. The suspect was arrested, taken into custody and awaits formal charges from the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office. The game between South Allegheny and Elizabeth Forward was called off. No one was injured.
