Parade Shooting Suspect Confesses To Firing Into Crowd

July 7, 2022 3:16 am

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (AP) – The man charged with killing seven people at an Independence Day parade confessed to police that he unleashed a hail of bullets from a rooftop in suburban Chicago and then fled to the Madison, Wisconsin, area, where he contemplated shooting up an event there. That’s according to authorities who spoke Wednesday. Robert Crimo III turned back to Illinois, where he was later arrested after deciding he was not prepared to pull off a shooting in Wisconsin. An Illinois judge ordered Crimo to be held without bail. A prosecutor said police found the shells of 83 bullets and three ammunition magazines on the rooftop that he fired from.

Report Shows Missed Opportunities To Stop Massacre

July 6, 2022 5:28 pm

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – A new report on the Uvalde elementary school massacre in Texas says a police officer had a chance to open fire on the gunman but missed it while waiting for permission to shoot. The report also says some of the 21 victims at Robb Elementary School likely “could have been saved” on May 24 had they received medical attention sooner. The report is yet another damning assessment of how police failed to act on opportunities that might have saved lives in what became the deadliest school shooting in the U.S. since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012.

Bullets Fired During Fireworks Show Were Far Away

July 6, 2022 4:47 pm

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Police say bullets that grazed two police officers during a Fourth of July fireworks show in Philadelphia and prompted an evacuation of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway likely were fired from far away. Chief Inspector Frank Vanore of the Philadelphia Police Department told reporters Wednesday that one .40 caliber round “probably coming in a downward direction” hit the top of an officer’s hat. At about the same time Monday night, an officer about 20 feet away was cut on the shoulder by a round from the same gun. Vanore said they could have been fired from a mile or more away. No arrests have been announced.

Santana Postpones Starlake Show After Collapse

July 6, 2022 8:48 am

DETROIT (AP) – Guitar icon Carlos Santana collapsed on stage during a show in Michigan and was rushed to a hospital, later blaming the episode on forgetting to eat or drink water. Santana, 74, was “doing well” Wednesday after being taken from his show at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, some 40 miles northwest of Detroit, to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkston for observation Tuesday night, manager Michael Vrionis in a statement. “Just taking it easy,” the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer posted to Facebook just after midnight. “Forgot to eat and drink water so I dehydrated and passed out. Blessings and miracles to you all.” Santana is currently touring with Earth, Wind & Fire and was scheduled to perform tonight at The Pavilion at Starlake.  That show has been postponed but there is no word on when it might be rescheduled.

Judges Keeping Capitol Riot Trials In D.C Amid Bias Claims

July 6, 2022 4:19 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – A growing number of Capitol riot defendants are pushing to get their trials moved out of Washington. They claim they can’t get a fair trial before unbiased jurors in the District of Columbia. But, so far, the judges presiding over the cases have consistently rejected those requests for a change of trial venue. Plenty of Washington residents have personal connections to the riot, making it a challenge for judges and attorneys to choose impartial jurors. The task is even tougher as lawmakers hold high-profile public hearings on the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection less than a mile from the federal courthouse.

Appeals Set On Immigrants Brought To U.S. As Kids

July 6, 2022 4:18 am

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Immigrant advocates are hoping a federal appeals court will uphold an Obama-era program that prevents the deportation of thousands of immigrants brought into the United States as children. A federal judge in Texas last year declared the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program illegal – although he agreed to leave the program intact for those already benefiting from it while his order is appealed. Three judges on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans were set to hear arguments Wednesday. And supporters of the program planned a vigil outside the courthouse.

G-20 May Lead To Wider Divisions Over Ukraine

July 6, 2022 4:17 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Foreign ministers from the world’s largest nations are looking to address the war in Ukraine and its impact on energy and food security when they meet this week. Yet instead of providing unity, the talks may well exacerbate splits over the Ukraine conflict. That could drag the Group of 20 nations into even deeper divisions. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are set to attend the meeting in the Indonesian resort of Bali. It will mark the first time Blinken and Lavrov have been in the same room since January.

Work On State Budget Continues

July 6, 2022 4:14 am

HARRISBURG — Most Pennsylvania lawmakers were absent from the state Capitol on Tuesday, five days into the new budget year without a state government spending agreement in place. Leaders were hoping negotiations would wrap up over the coming days and the House announced voting sessions were scheduled through Friday. Thursday “might be a strong possibility for a lot of budget action,” a spokesperson for the majority Republicans in the state Senate told reporters in a Tuesday morning email update. The state House, whose schedule is also controlled by majority Republicans, planned to return to session Wednesday afternoon and also posted public notice of floor sessions to start Thursday and Friday mornings. Senators also will return to the Capitol on Wednesday evening.
