DALLAS (AP) – The number of U.S. flights being canceled is slowing down, but plenty of travelers are facing long delays as they try to get home from trips over the July Fourth holiday weekend. By late Monday afternoon on the East Coast, more than 2,200 U.S. flights had been delayed and more than 200 were canceled, according to FlightAware. The good news is, that’s fewer delays and cancellations than we’ve seen in recent days. Industry experts say airlines are struggling because demand for travel has recovered from the bottom of the pandemic faster than anyone expected. That’s causing airports to be almost as crowded as they were in 2019, before the pandemic.

BETHEL PARK, Pa. — (WPXI) – Police said a bold criminal was caught on camera wheeling out thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen merchandise from a local home improvement store. Police said the man in a gray hoodie was seen casually filling up a cart with $2,000 worth of wire from the Lowe’s in Bethel Park, before walking out in plain sight. Lowe’s said that organized retail crime is a growing challenge for retail stores across the country. Steve Salazar, a spokesperson for Lowe’s, sent the following statement: “Lowe’s continues to work closely with local law enforcement on this active case of organized retail crime (ORC) in Bethel Park. ORC is a growing challenge across the country and impacts not only our stores and our associates, but our customers and our communities. We’re seeing an increasing number of incidents involving wire theft from our stores and these stolen items being sold by well-organized criminal groups on online platforms and sites that provide them anonymity. Police said the suspect got into a silver Honda Accord and took off. Shoppers are certain that with a description of the suspect’s car and his picture out in the public, his crimes will come to a swift end.

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Two area gas stations will lower prices for regular gasoline to $2.38/gallon, the national average in 2021, on July 5. According to a release from Americans for Prosperity in Pennsylvania (AFP-PA), the grassroots group is taking over the Sunoco gas station in Latrobe and Joey’s On The Edge in Export to save drivers some pain at the pump. The participating stations are located at:
58 N Ligonier Street in Latrobe from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
5904 Washington Avenue in Export from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Sentencing was held for a Washington man who held up a gas station on Racetrack Road in October of 2021. Evan Hryniewich was sentenced to 22-44 months in a state correctional facility for pleading guilty to felony robbery with a threat for serious injury. Hryniewich entered the Marathon gas station with an Airsoft gun and demanded the cashier give him money. The cashier gave him roughly $100 and Hryniewich fled the scene with his accomplice Jacob Shuman who was driving. Police located the pair at Shuman’s residence where they found the gun used in the robbery. Shuman had been sentenced to two years probation on a conspiracy charge. Hryniewich will remain in the Washington County jail until a pending escape charge is adjudicated.

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (AP) — At least six people died and 24 were wounded in a shooting at a July Fourth parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, and officers are searching for a suspect who likely fired on the festivities from a rooftop, police said Monday. Highland Park Police Commander Chris O’Neill, the incident commander on scene, urged people to shelter in place as authorities search for the suspect. Hours after the shooting, with bystanders and media standing nearby, about a dozen officers suddenly dashed for a small office building half a block from where the shooting occurred — crouching at the glass doors, before flinging them open and rushing in, rifles pointed inside into a dark foyer. It was not immediately clear why the police had entered the building. Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said at a news conference that the gunman apparently opened fire on parade-goers from a rooftop using a rifle that was recovered at the scene. He didn’t know which building. Covelli said police believe there was only one shooter and warned that he should still be considered armed and dangerous. He and O’Neill described the shooting as random. The suspect has been described as a white male between the ages of eighteen and twenty.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A member of the House Jan. 6 committee says more witnesses are coming forward with new details on the Capitol insurrection following former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s devastating testimony last week against former President Donald Trump. Illinois Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger says “there will be way more information” in two public hearings this month and to “stay tuned,” because people are emerging “every day.” Hutchinson testified that Trump wanted to join an angry mob of his supporters who marched to the Capitol, where they rioted. Hutchinson also said then-White House counsel Pat Cipollone was concerned Trump would face criminal charges if the Republican then-president joined them.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) – Danish police said a gunman who killed three people when he opened fire in a crowded shopping mall acted alone and apparently selected his victims at random. Authorities all but ruled out Monday that attack was an “act of terrorism.” Police have not identified a motive for Sunday’s attack inside one of Scandinavia’s biggest shopping centers. A suspect carrying a rifle and knife was quickly arrested. Copenhagen chief police inspector Søren Thomassen said the 22-year-old Danish man also had access to another gun. He said the firearms were obtained illegally and that the suspect was known to mental health services but gave no further details on either.

ROME (AP) – Heavy rain was hampering the search in Italy for those unaccounted for – perhaps as many 15 – a day after an enormous chunk of an Alpine glacier broke off and slammed into hikers. Italian state TV said a body was located on Monday, raising to seven the known death toll of the avalanche from the Marmolada glacier a day earlier. Italian news reports said so far, four victims have been identified in a morgue set up in an ice rink in the resort town of Canazei. State TV reported that three of the dead were Italians, while the fourth was from Czechia. áWith conditions too dangerous for rescuers and dogs to search the slope, drones were being used for most of Monday morning.
