HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Legal challenges and a mountain of uncounted ballots are promising a long watch to find out who the people of Pennsylvania chose as president. A host of other major races in the state also stayed unresolved Wednesday. Those included races for several congressional seats, statewide officers and the legislature. Voters turned out in large numbers for an election that produced few of the glitches some had feared. But the decision to greatly expand mail-in voting means it could be days before it’s clear whether President Donald Trump repeated his surprise Pennsylvania victory from 2016 or whether native son Joe Biden would collect its 20 electoral votes.

WASHINGTON (AP) – More than 1,000 people protesting President Donald Trump converged on Black Lives Matter Plaza, just a block from the White House, while hundreds more marched through parts of downtown Washington, at times blocking traffic and lighting off fireworks. Scattered protests also took place from Seattle to New York City, but there were no signs of serious violence or widespread unrest in the hours immediately after the polls closed. The demonstrations in Washington were largely peaceful, with people chanting and unfurling anti-Trump banners. Hundreds of businesses in cities across the U.S. had boarded up their windows ahead of the election for fear of violence.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Joe Biden has defeated President Donald Trump in battleground Wisconsin, securing the state’s 10 electoral votes and reclaiming a key part of the blue wall that slipped away from Democrats four years ago. The Associated Press called Wisconsin for Biden after election officials said all outstanding ballots had been counted, save for a few hundred in one township and an expected small number of provisional ballots. Trump’s campaign has requested a recount. Statewide recounts in Wisconsin have historically changed the vote tally by only a few hundred votes. The victory for Biden bumps him up to 248 electoral votes, while Trump has 214. It takes 270 to win the presidency.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – It was a night for most of the incumbents in Western Pennsylvania, as many representatives on the local and state level held on to their positions. Republican Guy Reschenthaler looks to have secured another term over democratic challenger Bill Marx in the 14th Congressional District. Meanwhile, Devlin Robinson is projected to beat Democrat Pam Iovino for the PA Senate 37th District. Republican Tom O’Neal has sealed the win for another term as the 48th District Representative over former Washington County Commissioner Harlan Shober. Republican Bud Cook took another big win in the Mon Valley, beating Randy Barli for the 49th District. In the 46th District, Republican Jason Ortitay has won another term, beating familiar challenger Byron Timmins. Republican Josh Kail also took the 15th District once again, this time edging out Bob Williams. In races too close to call. Democratic incumbent Pam Snyder of the 50th District trails Larry Yost into the morning, meanwhile in the 39th District, GOP incumbent Mike Puskaric and Sara Summer Oliphant are very close. Both of those races are waiting on large amounts of mail-in ballots to be processed in the coming days.

DETROIT (AP) – Ford is recalling more than 375,000 Explorer SUVs in the U.S. and Canada to fix a suspension problem that has caused 13 crashes. The recall covers SUVs from the 2013 through 2017 model years built at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant from Sept. 4, 2012 to Jan. 25, 2017. They were sold or registered 22 states and six Canadian provinces where salt is used to clear roads during the winter. The automaker says the rear toe links can fracture, reducing steering control. A toe link puts weight on the tires so they stay on the ground. Ford says six people were hurt in the crashes. Dealers will inspect the suspension and replace parts if necessary. Customers will be notified starting the week of Nov. 30.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Joe Biden is predicting a victory in Pennsylvania on the eve of the election. Speaking at a drive-in rally in Pittsburgh, Biden encouraged the audience to vote and said, “I have a feeling we’re coming together for a big win tomorrow!” The crowd, about 250 cars gathered in the parking lot of Heinz Field, honked their horns and cheered as he spoke. Lady Gaga performed before Biden’s speech and exhorted the crowd to “vote like your lives depend on it!” After four events across Ohio and Pennsylvania Monday, Biden’s voice grew hoarse, but he was still energetic, at times pounding the podium for emphasis.

IZMIR, TURKEY (AP) – Turkish rescuers in the Turkish coastal city of Izmir have pulled a young girl out alive from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building four days after a strong earthquake hit Turkey and Greece. The girl – identified by Turkish media as 4-year-old Ayla Gezgin – was seen being taken into an ambulance on Tuesday, wrapped in a thermal blanket, amid the sounds of cheers and applause from rescue workers. The death toll in the earthquake reached 102, after rescuers retrieved more bodies elsewhere. The U.S. Geological Survey rated the quake at 7.0 magnitude, though other agencies recorded it as less severe.

Election Day in the U.S. is unfolding like no other, with nearly 100 million Americans having already cast their ballots. Voters took advantage of absentee balloting and early in-person voting amid a pandemic that has killed more than 230,000 Americans and worries about whether the Postal Service would deliver their ballot on time. President Donald Trump has been claiming without evidence that mail ballots will lead to widespread voter fraud and has threatened to file lawsuits to stop the counting of late-arriving ballots in some states. He has especially targeted the key battleground state of Pennsylvania for legal challenges.

BERLIN (AP) – As Europe tries to break the surging second wave of coronavirus infections, Germany is betting on a new type of test to protect vulnerable populations. The closure of nursing homes to visitors caused considerable anguish among residents and relatives in the spring. So-called antigen tests, which look for a specific protein on the virus, were first launched months ago. Germany announced recently that it is bulk-buying millions of such tests each month. But while they are cheap and fast, some experts note the antigen method is also less accurate than the standard test and results should be treated with caution.

Millions of registered voters across Pennsylvania and the United States cast their ballots Tuesday for various races, including President of the United States. Polling places in Pennsylvania were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. If your mail-in ballot is postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day and received in your county office by 5 p.m. on Nov. 6, it will be considered timely. Pennsylvania voters are playing a crucial and perhaps decisive role in choosing the next president as Donald Trump and Joe Biden headline a statewide election in which millions of ballots have already been cast. Long lines formed at many polling places as voters also decided races for Congress, the General Assembly and a trio of statewide offices – attorney general, auditor general and treasurer. Polls opened against the backdrop of a pandemic, a police shooting and civil unrest in Philadelphia, and the potential for a drawn-out legal fight over late-arriving mail-in ballots. Election officials caution the winner might not be known for days as counties begin tabulating more than 2.4 million votes that arrived by mail. Tune to WJPA 95.3 FM/1450 AM beginning at 8 p.m. for complete election results coverage.
