Israel’s Military Widens Its Offensive

December 4, 2023 5:14 am

(AP) – Israel’s military has called for more evacuations in southern Gaza as it widens its offensive aimed at eliminating the territory’s Hamas rulers. The war has already killed thousands of Palestinians and displaced most of Gaza’s residents, who are running out of safe places to go. The Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says the death toll in the territory since Oct. 7 has surpassed 15,500. Israel says it targets Hamas operatives and blames civilian casualties on the militants, accusing them of operating in residential neighborhoods. Hopes for another temporary truce faded after Israel called its negotiators home. Hamas says talks on releasing more hostages must be tied to a permanent cease-fire. The United States, Qatar and Egypt say they are working on a longer truce.

HARMONY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — (WPXI) – A mother in Beaver County is facing homicide charges after she allegedly strangled her 4-month-old son and suffocated her 2-year-old son to death. Beaver County District Attorney David Lozier says Quanesha Lindsey, 27, admitted to the murders. Police went to the 1120 block of 8th Street Extension in Harmony Township on Saturday after receiving a call about an infant not breathing. According to court documents, officers from the Ambridge Police Department went into the basement of a house where they found a man performing CPR on the baby. Officers took over the process but were unable to resuscitate the child. UN Climate Talks Focusing On Human Health

December 3, 2023 6:48 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — With Planet Earth running a fever, U.N. climate talks have turned their focus on contagious effects on human health. Under a brown haze over Dubai, participants at the COP28 summit moved beyond lofty rhetoric and calls for unity to curb global warming to concerns like the deaths of at least 7 million people globally from air pollution each year and the spread of diseases like cholera and malaria as global warming upends weather systems. In the background and off-stage — participants were also turning attention to tough negotiations over the next nine days to push for more agreement on ways to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times.

Uber Ride Turns Dangerous

December 3, 2023 5:56 am

ROBINSON, Pa. – (WPXI) – A woman is sharing a frightening ordeal after she said an Uber driver hit a car and fled the scene all with her in the backseat. The young woman, Kiara, said she begged her Uber driver to stop after hitting the other vehicle. But when he didn’t, she feared for her own life, that’s when she jumped out along a busy stretch of highway into traffic. Photos taken by the woman show the vehicle’s damage: a missing tire, mangled back door, and damaged bumper. Kiara said she ordered the Uber from Washington Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh, a roughly 40-minute drive. She explained things were going smoothly until just before 1 a.m. when the driver missed her exit along Interstate 79 near Robinson. “He put it in reverse to get back onto the exit,” Kiara said. State police confirmed that’s when the Uber driver, identified as Gue Cristiano, rammed into another vehicle causing it to roll over. But instead of stopping, he kept going, with Kiara still in the back seat begging him to pull over. “I kept saying please stop just please stop the car. I want to get out. I asked several times and at that point had to just jump out,” she said. After she jumped out the Uber driver finally stopped, and Kiara grabbed her cell phone and called for help. She endured several serious friction burns and had to be taken to the hospital. Now she wants accountability from not only the driver but the company. “It’s hard to contact for help on the Uber app, I feel like there should be some type of emergency button,” she explained. No charges have been filed but Uber confirmed that they are working with police to help with the investigation.
