California Cliff Collapse Claims Three Lives

ENCINITAS, Calif. (AP) – A popular Southern California surfing beach is closed after a sea cliff collapsed, sending tons of sandstone onto beachgoers and killing three people.
The cliff near Grandview Beach in the Encinitas area is still considered unstable, although clifftop homes are said to be in no immediate danger. Authorities say a 30-foot-long slab of the cliff collapsed Friday afternoon. Rescuers rushed to dig out victims, but a woman died at the scene and two more succumbed at hospitals. Two other people also were injured. All were adults. Dogs and heavy equipment were brought in to search for other victims, but none were found. Authorities say cliffs in the area are subject to natural erosion. Several people have been killed or injured over the years in bluff collapses.

Police Chase Started In Monongahela Ends In Shooting

(WPXI) A suspect was shot following a police pursuit that ended in South Park. Allegheny County Police said the pursuit ended on Edgewood Street, which is off Brownsville Road. Just before 3 a.m. is when the shooting occurred. 911 officials said the chase was started by a Monongahela police officer in Washington County. Police said the suspect was shot once and taken to an area hospital in stable condition. It’s not clear what led up to the start of that chase, and officials have not yet released the identity of the person shot.

A$AP Rocky Back In U.S.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Rapper A$AP Rocky is back in the United States as the verdict in a Swedish assault case against him and two other Americans looms, Los Angeles television stations report. Local stations report the American artist was among a group of people shown emerging from a private airplane at Los Angeles International Airport in footage broadcast late Friday night.

Democrats Continue Campaigns In Nevada

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Nineteen Democrats hoping to be the next president have arrived in Nevada seeking support from labor unions in the early voting state. They’ll speak Saturday at a forum by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Top contenders such as former Vice President Joe Biden and Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders will speak. Nevada will be the third state, and the first in the West, where Democratic voters will cast ballots in next year’s primary.

Calls For Impeachment Continue

WASHINGTON (AP) – Freshman lawmakers may be the ones who decide when, if ever, House Democrats start formal efforts to impeach President Donald Trump. And their constituents are making their feelings known. In New Jersey, first-term Rep. Andy Kim fended off demands from voters to launch proceedings. In Virginia, Rep. Abigail Spanberger encountered voters with questions on impeachment. With half of House Democrats now in favor of beginning an inquiry, the pressure is mounting on holdouts.

Popular Snack Being Recalled

HORSHAM, Pa. (AP) – One flavor of Entenmann’s Little Bites Soft Baked Cookies is being recalled due to the potential presence of blue plastic pieces in individual packaging pouches. Bimbo Bakeries USA, the Horsham, Pennsylvania-based owner of Entenmann’s, says all of the five-pack, mini chocolate chip cookie packages are being removed from stores.

State General Assistance Program Ended

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – A state program that provided $205 a month in cash payments to poor or disabled Pennsylvanians has ended. The program known as general assistance ceased Thursday under a month-old law, while the state Commonwealth Court rejected an injunction request to keep it operating during a legal challenge. Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf opposed the program’s elimination. His administration is trying to get its roughly 11,000 recipients help from other state and non-profit services.

Victim Identified In Greene County Fire

The Greene County Coroner has identified the man who was killed when his home went up in flames on Thursday. Greene County Coroner Gene Rush has identified the victim as 80 year old Thomas H. Shaneyfelt, Sr. of 105 Creek Road, Morgan Township. Witnesses to the fire reported seeing black smoke but heard no explosion. Officials report that the fire may have started in the kitchen. The cause and manner of Shaneyfelt’s death are pending and still under investigation.

Explosion Clean Up Continues Through The Weekend

Clean up is ongoing on Park Lane in North Franklin Township. Lee Gierczynski, Communications Manager for Columbia Gas of PA and MD states that all non-emergency work has been suspended in the township and they will concentrate on clean up. Columbia Gas has hired SERVPRO to clear debris from the explosion site and properties of anyone else whose property has been affected. McDonald Kemp To Become Newest Judge

Washington County will get its seventh Common Pleas Judge at the end of August. Traci McDonald-Kemp will be sworn in on August 30 as the newest judge due to growing caseload in Washington County. The position is an interim one. The 48 year old McDonald-Kemp won nomination for the 10 year position on both party tickets in the May primary election. Her name will appear on the ballot for formal election in November. McDonald-Kemp will be the first black woman to serve on the bench. She is the second person of color to serve following the late Paul Simmons.
