Gaza Authorities: Palestinian Death Toll Passes 60,000

July 29, 2025 3:34 pm

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza’s Health Ministry says over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in the 21-month Israel-Hamas war. Israeli strikes overnight killed more than two dozen people, mostly women and children, health officials said. Israel’s offensive, launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, has destroyed vast areas of Gaza, displaced around 90% of the population and fueled a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Experts warned Tuesday that the territory of some 2 million Palestinians is on the brink of famine, as Israeli restrictions and a breakdown of security have made it nearly impossible to safely deliver aid.

A Western Pennsylvania college student has been accused of making threats of violence against his school on social media. Trevor Howard faces charges after allegedly posting a question on the popular college student social app YikYak back in February. Howard reportedly asked how many people he could kill if he opened fire on the Washington & Jefferson College campus. The local District Attorney has said that Howard declined a five-year probationary plea deal. If Howard is convicted on trial, he could face a sentence of up to seven years.

Economy Rebounds 3% In Second Quarter

July 29, 2025 8:52 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy expanded at a surprising 3% annual pace from April through June, bouncing back at least temporarily from a first-quarter drop that reflected disruptions arising from President Donald Trump’s trade wars. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that America gross domestic product — the nation’s output of goods and services — rebounded after falling at a 0.5% clip from January through March. The first-quarter drop was mainly caused by a surge in imports — which are subtracted from GDP — as businesses scrambled to bring in foreign goods ahead of Trump’s tariffs. Economists had expected 2% second-quarter growth.

Trump Says He Ended Friendship With Epstein

July 29, 2025 5:08 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein ended after Epstein hired people who had worked for Trump. The Republican president said Monday that he had warned Epstein about hiring Trump staff and that when Epstein did it again, “I threw him out of the place.” The place Trump refers to is his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. Authorities say the disgraced financier killed himself in a New York jail cell in 2019 as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges. The case has dogged Trump after he and his top allies stoked conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death.

Israel’s Leader Claims No One In Gaza Is Starving

July 29, 2025 5:06 am

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says no one in Gaza is starving. President Donald Trump disagrees and notes the images emerging of emaciated people. Trump says “those children look very hungry.” Here’s what we know as the World Health Organization says 63 of the 74 malnutrition-related deaths in Gaza this year have occurred this month. Those included 24 children under the age of 5. After international pressure, Israel over the weekend announced humanitarian pauses, airdrops and other measures meant to allow more aid to Palestinians in Gaza. But people there say little or nothing has changed on the ground.

Mixed Reaction To European Union’s Trade Agreement

July 29, 2025 5:05 am

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The European Union’s trade agreement with the Trump administration is receiving mixed reviews. EU officials claim they avoided a major economic disaster. But French officials argue the EU didn’t leverage its full strength. The deal imposes a 15% tariff on most goods imported into the U.S. with no agreement on key areas like pharmaceuticals and steel. French officials criticize the deal as unbalanced while Germany and Italy see it as avoiding unnecessary escalation. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Monday called it a failure for Europe. Economists warn the deal could hinder growth and lacks clarity.

Top U.S & Chinese Trade Officials Huddle Over Tariffs

July 29, 2025 5:04 am

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Chinese and U.S. trade officials have arrived for a second day of meetings in the Swedish capital Tuesday to try to break a logjam over tariffs that have skewed the pivotal commercial ties between the world’s two largest economies. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng made no public comments to reporters after the first day of talks that lasted nearly five hours behind closed doors at the Swedish prime minister’s office Monday. Analysts expect the Stockholm talks, at a minimum, will result in an extension of current tariff levels that are far lower than the triple-digit percentage rates earlier this year.

One man says he saw people running and screaming.

NYC Gunman Claimed To Have Brain Disease

July 29, 2025 5:01 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say a gunman who killed four people in a Manhattan skyscraper before taking his own life claimed to have a brain disease linked to contact sports and was trying to target the National Football League’s headquarters in the building. New York City Mayor Eric Adams says investigators believe the gunman wanted to get up to the NFL’s offices on Monday but entered the wrong elevator. Police say Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas casino worker, had a note in his wallet that suggested he had a grievance against the NFL and asked that his brain be studied. He played high school football in California but never played in the NFL. Among those killed was an off-duty police officer working security.
