Frank Scandale Will Stand Trial

January 9, 2020 3:31 am

Former Washington County Clerk of Courts Frank Scandale was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, but instead, waived his case to court.  The 52-year-old from Canonsburg, is facing multiple charges, including theft, in connection with some ninety-six-thousand-dollars missing from his office.  In July, the Washington County Controller’s Office informed county commissioners that their most recent audit revealed that money was missing from the clerk of courts office, which handles a variety of payments, including those for criminal cases.  The commissioners then turned the findings over to the Pennsylvania State Police, whose investigation turned up missing cash deposits and missing checks.  Scandale, a Democrat, had been up for re-election to a second four-year term, but lost to Republican Brenda Davis.  Scandale faces a formal arraignment within the next forty-five days. Scandale remains free on one-hundred-thousand-dollars bond.

Flu Cases On The Rise

January 9, 2020 3:28 am

The Allegheny County Health Department has reported the first flu-related death this season in Allegheny County. So far, 34 people have been hospitalized. The ACHD issued a statement saying the resident was over 90 years of age and had underlying medical conditions, but they have seen a larger number of flu cases this year compared to last year at this time, particularly Type B flu. Allegheny County leads the state with 5,175 flu cases reported. Washington County has reported 905 flu cases and Greene County has reported 269. Health officials say it’s still too early to make any predictions or speculate what’s to come, but they say the best way to fight the flu is to get vaccinated. While the effectiveness of this year’s vaccine has not yet been determined, it’s very important to get a flu shot every year.

Legislators Get Briefing On Killing Of Iranian General

January 8, 2020 4:52 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Trump administration has made its case for killing a powerful Iranian general before legislators on Capitol Hill. But Democrats say the classified briefing Wednesday was short on details and left them guessing about the president’s next steps in the Mideast. Democrats say that by not disclosing many details of the threat that prompted the U.S. to kill Iran’s top general, President Donald Trump is asking the American public to trust the very intelligence reports he has often disparaged. Trump administration officials stress that intelligence about imminent threats to Americans in the region justified the strike, but Democrats want more information.

Takata Recalling 10M Air Bag Inflators

January 8, 2020 8:48 am

DETROIT (AP) –   Takata is recalling 10 million more front air bag inflators sold to 14 different automakers because they can explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel. The recall is the last one the bankrupt company agreed to in a 2015 settlement with U.S. safety regulators. It could bring to a close the largest series of recalls in U.S. history. The 10 million inflators are part of the approximately 70 million in the US that Takata was to recall as part of the agreement with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Vehicles made by Audi, BMW, Honda, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler, Ferrari, Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen are affected. Automakers will determine what models are involved and launch their own recalls.

Cancer Group Finds Biggest One-Year Drop In Death Rate

January 8, 2020 7:54 am

NEW YORK (AP) – Researchers are reporting the largest-ever one-year decline in the U.S. cancer death rate, and they are crediting advances in lung-tumor treatments. The overall cancer death rate has been falling since 1991, and usually drops about 1.5% a year. But it fell 2.2% from 2016 to 2017, according to a new report by the American Cancer Society. That’s the largest drop ever seen in national cancer statistics that go back to 1930. The numbers were published Wednesday. Experts mainly credit refinements in surgery, better diagnostic scanning and more precise radiation treatments.
