May 20, 2025 4:59 am

Voters across Pennsylvania went to the polls Tuesday for the Primary Election.  Polls opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 8 p.m.  There were countywide races for Controller, Recorder of Deeds, and Sheriff. There were also four magisterial district judge races.  Locally, there were municipal and school board races.  Statewide races for Superior Court and Commonwealth Court Judge were also on the ballot.  Washington County Elections Director Melanie Ostrander told WJPA that because it was an off-year election, she expected a very low voter turnout, just about twenty-percent.

Trump Selects Concept For $175B Missile Defense Program

May 20, 2025 4:58 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has announced the concept he wants for his future Golden Dome missile defense program — a multilayered system that for the first time will put U.S. weapons in space. Speaking Tuesday in the Oval Office, Trump said the system would cost $175 billion. He expects it will be “fully operational before the end of my term,” which ends in 2029, and have the capability of intercepting missiles “even if they are launched from space.” A U.S. official familiar with the program says it’s likelier that the complex system may have some initial capability by that point. The Air Force secretary told senators Tuesday that Golden Dome overall is “still in the conceptual stage.”

Race For Pittsburgh Mayor Takes Center Stage

May 20, 2025 4:51 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The heavily Democratic cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will elect new nominees for top jobs in Pennsylvania’s primary election. The winners of those two Democratic primaries on Tuesday are all-but assured of victory in November’s general election. In Philadelphia, District Attorney Larry Krasner is seeking a third term as the top prosecutor in the nation’s sixth most populous city. Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey is seeking a second term. Both ran originally as progressives and are facing a primary challenger. Krasner’s opponent is Pat Dugan, a former Philadelphia Municipal Court judge. Gainey’s opponent is Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor. Ballots will also feature contests for two statewide courts seats.

“Person Of Interest” Now Charged With Homicide

May 20, 2025 2:50 am

(WPXI) – A man who was considered a person of interest in the murder of a Rostraver woman has now been charged with her death. Dorian Jeri-Greene is facing several charges, including criminal homicide, robbery and burglary. On April 11, Jennah Siebert, 24, was found shot to death inside her home on Lenity School Road. After being identified as a person of interest a few days after Siebert’s death, Jeri-Greene was taken into custody in Tampa, Florida, last week on unrelated charges. Jeri-Greene was charged in a home invasion and robbery in Washington County two months before Siebert’s murder. According to court documents, Jeri-Greene is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home by destroying a door frame, then strangling her before running out of the home with a hatchet.

George Wendt Dead At 76

May 20, 2025 2:49 am

NEW YORK (AP) — George Wendt, an actor with an Everyman charm who played the affable, beer-loving barfly Norm on the hit 1980s TV comedy “Cheers,” has died. He was 76. Wendt in later life crafted a stage career that took him to Broadway in “Art,” “Hairspray” and “Elf.” Despite a long career of roles onstage and on TV, it was as gentle and henpecked Norm Peterson on “Cheers” that he was most associated, earning six straight Emmy Award nominations for best supporting actor in a comedy series from 1984-89. The series was centered on lovable losers in a Boston bar and starred Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, John Ratzenberger, Kirstie Alley and Woody Harrelson.  (Photo:  AP)

Trump Can Strip Legal Protections From Venezuelans

May 19, 2025 5:03 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing the Trump administration to strip legal protections from 350,000 Venezuelans, potentially exposing them to deportation. The court’s order Monday, with only one noted dissent, puts on hold a ruling from a federal judge in San Francisco that kept in place Temporary Protected Status for the Venezuelans that would have otherwise expired last month. The status allows people already in the United States to live and work legally because their native countries are deemed unsafe for return due to natural disaster or civil strife.

Trump’s Big Bill Advances In Rare Weekend Vote

May 19, 2025 4:23 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans advanced their massive tax cut and border security package out of a key House committee during a rare Sunday night vote. But there’s more work to do. Deficit hawks who had blocked the measure two days earlier are still dissatisfied and want steeper spending cuts. While the Budget Committee advanced the package, 17-16, four of the conservatives simply voted “present” as negotiations continue. It all points to a difficult week ahead for Speaker Mike Johnson, who is determined to push the package forward in a House vote ahead of his Memorial Day deadline.

Russia & Ukraine To Immediately Begin Ceasefire Talks

May 19, 2025 4:19 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” begin ceasefire negotiations. Trump spoke on Monday after separate calls with the leaders of both countries meant to spur progress toward ending the three-year war. The conversations did not appear to yield a major breakthrough. It was not clear when or where any talks might take place or who would participate. Trump made the announcement days after the first direct engagement between Russian and Ukrainian delegations since 2022. Those negotiations on Friday in Turkey brought about a limited exchange of prisoners but no pause in the fighting.

Biden has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer

May 19, 2025 4:16 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Joe Biden’s office says he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The finding came after the 82-year-old reported urinary symptoms, which led doctors to discover a nodule on his prostate. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday, with the cancer cells having spread to the bone. His office said Sunday this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, but the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management. Biden and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.

The UK And EU To Seal New Deals 5 Years After Brexit

May 19, 2025 4:14 am

LONDON (AP) — The United Kingdom and the European Union are expected to seal new deals on fishing rights and defense as officials meet in London to discuss closer ties. Monday’s meeting is their first official summit since Brexit. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is meeting with top EU officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. British media reported that officials would announce an agreement on fishing access for EU boats in U.K. waters, as well as details on a defense and security partnership. There are hopes the deals could improve the U.K. economy, which has been hit by a drop in EU trade caused by increased costs and red tape after Britain left the bloc in 2020.
