Holiday Travelers Head Home

November 27, 2023 5:06 am

The Pittsburgh International Airport was packed with travelers making their way home after the Thanksgiving holiday. Despite the busy skies, several people said the travel day was smooth sailing. The TSA said air travel on Sunday could break a record for the busiest single travel day ever with an estimated 2.9 million passengers flying home. In Pittsburgh, the line for security spilled out past the ropes at one point. If you plan on flying out on Monday, there could be some weather delays and cancellations. The TSA is urging travelers to check their flight status and arrive at the airport at least two hours early.

McCarthy’s Bid For Speaker Continues To Fail

January 4, 2023 4:13 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Republicans are plowing through the second day of the new Congress, with no clear off-ramp from their political chaos over electing a new speaker. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy failed anew to win the House speakership in two votes, faring no better than he had in three votes Tuesday when 20 fellow Republicans rejected his bid. Former President Donald Trump vigorously renewed his support for McCarthy, but it made no difference. And an outspoken conservative Republican said Trump should tell McCarthy to drop out. The chamber’s most conservative members believe he’s neither conservative enough nor tough enough to battle Democrats.

Clerk Of Courts Seeks Stay Of Contempt Hearing

February 23, 2022 1:39 am

Washington County Clerk of Courts Brenda Davis is hoping to have her contempt of court hearing, scheduled for Monday, stayed by a court order. Davis’s attorney filed a request Tuesday morning with the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania requesting it review Washington County President Judge John DiSalle’s administrative orders regarding the Clerk of Courts Office. The request is seeking to find out whether the orders issued in 2021 infringe on the consitutional duties of the office. The filing is an application for a Writ of Prohibition and a request for an emergency stay of her contempt hearing. The contempt hearing was stayed once when Davis appealed to the state’s Commonwealth Court. The court, however, rejected her appeals and Judge DiSalle scheduled the hearing for Monday. The hearing stems from an incident just before Thanksgiving when Davis was detained by sheriff’s deputies for allegedly refusing to allow the transfer of juvenile court records from her office to another office.

A.I. Keeping Elders Safe In South Korea

May 31, 2020 8:31 am

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — In a cramped office in eastern Seoul, Hwang Seungwon points a remote control toward a huge NASA-like overhead screen stretching across one of the walls. With each flick of the control, a colorful array of pie charts, graphs and maps reveals the search habits of thousands of South Korean senior citizens being monitored by voice-enabled “smart” speakers, an experimental remote care service the company says is increasingly needed during the coronavirus crisis. “We closely monitor for signs of danger, whether they are more frequently using search words that indicate rising states of loneliness or insecurity,” said Hwang, director of a social enterprise that handles SK Telecom’s services. Trigger words lead to a recommendation for a visit by public health officials. As South Korea’s government pushes to allow businesses to access vast amounts of personal information and to ease restrictions holding back telemedicine, tech firms could potentially find much bigger markets for their artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

Jeffrey Epstein Has Died By Suicide In Jail

August 10, 2019 10:24 am

NEW YORK (AP) – A former law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that Jeffrey Epstein has died by suicide while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges in New York.
The medical examiner’s office in Manhattan confirmed the financier’s death. The former law enforcement official said Epstein was found dead Saturday morning at the Manhattan Correctional Center. The official had been briefed on the matter but spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss it publicly. Epstein’s arrest last month launched separate investigations into how authorities handled his case initially when similar charges were first brought against him in Florida more than a decade ago. U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta resigned last month after coming under fire for overseeing that deal when he was U.S. attorney in Miami.

Damar Hamlin Toy Drive Surpasses $6.5M

January 4, 2023 4:09 am

Damar Hamlin’s goal was simple: He wanted to raise $2,500 online to buy toys for needy kids. It took about two years. Then came Monday, when the Buffalo Bills safety was critically injured and needed his heart restarted on the field in a chilling scene during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin remains in critical condition at a Cincinnati hospital after going into cardiac arrest on the field.  Hamlin’s uncle, Dorrian Glenn, told CNN that his nephew had to have his heart re-started twice – once on the field, and once at the hospital. Glenn says there were some encouraging signs Tuesday, including doctors reducing the amount of oxygen Hamlin was receiving. He instantly became one of the biggest stories in sports, and thousands of people found his GoFundMe page. The result was roughly $6.5 million donated after his injury – and – the number is still climbing.

Two People Arrested For Waynesburg Murders

February 23, 2022 1:00 am

Authorities have arrested two Waynesburg residents in the shooting death of a man and a woman whose bodies were found on Valentine’s Day.  According to the court documents, 28-year-old Cortland Rogers and 23-year-old Shawna Smith are facing multiple charges, including criminal homicide, conspiracy to commit homicide and burglary.  The charges stem from the murder of 54-year-old Kevin Lamar Williford and 47-year-old Judy Butler Hunter.  The two were found by their landlord in their second floor apartment on South Morris Street.  According to the report, Rogers told police that Smith killed Williford, while Smith said that Rogers shot both of them.  Police say Hunter and Williford had been shot in the head and their bodies were in advanced stages of decomposition, leading them to believe they had been dead for a long period of time.  Smith reportedly told police that she and Rogers had gone to the couple’s apartment to confront Williford about missing jewelry and unpaid drug money.  The charges were filed against the two while they were already in jail in Greene County.  Authorities say they were being held there for allegedly tying up and assaulting a woman at their home at 41 Wood Street.
