PITTSBURGH (WPXI) — Police cars set on fire, businesses vandalized and protesters and police officers injured — all of that prompted the mayor to implement citywide curfew and call in more police. “I’m just so angry at the fact that some segment hijacked this and took some of the youth and brought them into the mix,” said Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert. Schubert lashed out at protesters who turned violent and set fire to police cars, assaulted journalists and looted businesses. Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto implemented a curfew at 8:30 p.m. and called in more law enforcement agencies. The mayor and the chief both appeared visibly upset that a peaceful protest for more than two hours turned violent so quickly. And they’re blaming it on outsiders. “I’m willing to bet my check that there’s lot of people who are anarchists, who, they’re not here to protest what happened. They’re here to take advantage of the situation and try to throw it their way and bring other people into the mix and cause damage, cause injuries with that. And there’s no doubt that’s who’s doing it. And a lot of the things we are seeing are white males dressed in the anarchist Antifa,” Schubert said. “They’re the ones who are fueling a lot of this. It’s just a damn shame that they took advantage of the situation.” Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said more than a dozen businesses in the Central Business District have been vandalized.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – More than 550 residency slots at a Philadelphia teaching hospital have fetched a $55 million winning bid at a bankruptcy auction ahead of the facility’s impending closure.
The residency slots at Hahnemann University Hospital were won by a team of six local health systems at Thursday’s auction, topping bids by Tower Health and a California company that wants to reopen the hospital. Christiana Care Health System, Cooper University Health Care, and Main Line Health joined Einstein Healthcare Network, Jefferson Health and Temple University Health System in the winning bid. The salaries and benefits of those residencies are paid by Medicare, which has objected to the sale in bankruptcy court. Hahnemann is still in the process of closing, but the 496-bed hospital has no patients. It’s closing due to unsustainable financial losses. A bankruptcy hearing on the hospital’s sale has been rescheduled for Aug. 19.

A Washington County man died in a head-on crash in Fayette County on Saturday. A crash report from Pennsylvania State Police in Belle Vernon says the crash happened on Brownsville Road just before 11 p.m. in Jefferson Township when a truck crossed the center line and hit a sedan head-on. The driver of the sedan, identified as Quinte Brown, 26, of Donora, died at the scene. The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for injuries. His current condition is not known. Troopers say they believe alcohol was involved.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — An attorney for the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd says his family has been kept in the dark by federal prison officials after he was stabbed in prison. A person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Friday that Derek Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. The medium-security prison has been plagued by security lapses and staffing shortages. Chauvin’s lawyer says his family has been provided no information about his condition from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. A spokesperson for the agency has not responded to an Associated Press request for comment.

A new U.S. study finds that reports of young children accidentally eating marijuana-laced treats rose sharply as pot became legal in more places. More than 7,000 confirmed cases of kids younger than 6 eating pot edibles were reported to the nation’s poison control centers over a recent five-year period. The study published Tuesday found nearly a quarter of those children were hospitalized, with some becoming seriously ill. The study’s author says parents need to be more vigilant and keep pot candies, chocolate and cookies out of reach of children.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – A federal prosecutor says three Minneapolis police officers charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights sat by and “chose to do nothing” as Floyd pleaded for air and then went silent. Prosecutor Manda Sertich singled out each former officer as closing arguments in their trial began Tuesday. Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane are charged with depriving Floyd of his right to medical care as Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for 9 1/2 minutes in May 2020. Lane held the 46-year-old Black man’s feet, Kueng knelt on his back and Thao held back bystanders. Kueng and Thao are also charged with failing to intervene to stop Chauvin. (Photo: ABC)

SUEZ, Egypt (AP) – A canal service provider says workers have successfully set free a colossal container ship that for nearly a week has been stuck sideways across the Suez Canal, one of the world’s most crucial arteries for trade. Leth Agencies said the vessel had been refloated on Monday. Helped by the peak of high tide, a flotilla of tugboats managed to wrench the bow of the skyscraper-sized Ever Given from the sandy back of the crucial waterway, where it had been firmly lodged since last Tuesday.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – The U.N. Security Council has approved a resolution extending for a year an arms embargo on South Sudan and a travel ban and financial sanctions for targeted individuals. Russia, China and South Africa abstained as the resolution passed 12-0 Friday. The U.S.-drafted resolution welcomes “encouraging developments in South Sudan’s peace process,” including the beginning of the formation of a transitional government. But it also expresses “deep concern at continued fighting in South Sudan” and condemns violations of the peace deal and cessation of hostilities agreement. The resolution urges South Sudan’s leaders to finalize establishment of the transitional national unity government.

MONACA, Pa. (AP) – President Donald Trump is coming to western Pennsylvania next week to visit a multibillion-dollar ethane cracker plant under construction.
A White House official said Thursday the visit to the 386-acre site in Monaca that had been planned for this week before two mass shootings occurred will take place on Tuesday.
The massive Shell Pennsylvania Chemicals plant will convert natural gas liquids into plastic pellets to be used in manufacturing. There are currently about 5,000 construction workers on the site. Shell has said it expects to have about 600 permanent workers at the Ohio River facility, once it’s fully built and up and running sometime in the early 2020s. The plant will be operated by Shell Polymers.

INDIANA, Pa. — Former President Donald Trump is making a campaign stop in Indiana today. Trump’s rally will be held on the campus of Indiana University of Pa. at 7 p.m. The rally is Trump’s fifth time visiting Pennsylvania since a gunman tried to assassinate him at his Butler Farm Show rally in July. Doors will open at 3 p.m.
