LOS ANGELES (AP) – A second CNN executive is exiting the cable news network in the wake of an internal investigation. Allison Gollust’s resignation follows the company’s conclusion of its inquiry concerning ex-anchor Chris Cuomo and his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Gollust’s exit followed the resignation earlier this month of CNN President Jeff Zucker. According to a memo from Jason Kilar, CEO of CNN parent WarnerMedia, the investigation found violations of company policies, including CNN’s news standards and practices, by Zucker, Gollust, and Chris Cuomo. Gollust fired back, saying the memo was an attempt at retaliation intended to distract attention from its own actions.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling for a halt to all violence against Asians and people of Asian descent. U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said “the secretary-general is profoundly concerned” about the targeting of Asians during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said “the world has witnessed horrific deadly attacks, verbal and physical harassment, bullying in schools, workplace discrimination, incitement to hatred in the media and on social media platforms, and incendiary language by those in positions of power.” The statement follows last Tuesday’s rampage at three Atlanta-area massage businesses that killed eight people, six of them Asian-American women.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Trump administration has frozen all Venezuelan government assets in a significant escalation of tensions with socialist leader Nicolas Maduro. The ban on Americans doing business with Venezuela’s government takes effect immediately. An executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday cited Maduro’s continued “usurpation” of power and human rights abuses by those loyal to him. The order falls short of an outright trade embargo but represents the most crippling U.S. efforts to remove Maduro since the Trump administration recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s rightful leader in January. Previous sanctions have targeted Venezuela’s oil industry, the source of most of the country’s export revenue.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tupperware Brands has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company that revolutionized food storage decades ago says it plans to continue operating and will seek court approval for a sale. The filing comes after growing struggles to revitalize the business. Tupperware saw a resurgence during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, but demand has since waned amid rising competition. And financial troubles have continued to pile up for the Florida company. Tupperware began to struggle as more families gave up making dinner from scratch and started dining out more. (Photo: AP)

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian health officials say at least 30 premature babies have been evacuated from Gaza’s largest hospital and will be transferred to Egypt. A U.N. team said earlier Sunday that 291 patients are left at Shifa Hospital including 32 babies in extremely critical condition after thousands of patients and displaced people left the day before. The Palestinian Red Crescent says the babies will be transferred to a hospital in the Egyptian border city of Rafah. Israel meanwhile signaled that it plans to expand its operations to southern Gaza, where it had told hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to seek refuge early in the war. Israel has long alleged that Hamas maintains a sprawling command post at Shifa, part of its wider accusation that the fighters use civilians as cover.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Officials in New York say state and military police were sent to keep people from driving in snow-choked Buffalo. The Erie County executive said Tuesday that police are being positioned at entrances to Buffalo and at major intersections to enforce a ban on driving. Officials say more than 30 people died in the region. That’s in addition to about two dozen other deaths the huge storm caused around the country. And an emergency services commissioner in the Buffalo area says crews are keeping an eye on warmer weather forecast for later in the week that could bring a threat of flooding as the snow melts.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Democrats say they are pushing toward a vote on expanded gun control measures as the nation reels from its second mass shooting in a week. President Joe Biden says “we have to act,” but prospects for any major changes were dim, for now, in the closely divided Congress. In brief remarks responding to the shooting, Biden urged Congress to move quickly to close the loopholes in the background check system and also to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed Tuesday morning to bring House-passed legislation that would require background checks for most all gun sales and transfers to the Senate floor, whether it will pass or not. The attack in Colorado killed 10 people, including a police officer.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern barely skipped a beat when an earthquake struck during a live television interview. She interrupted Newshub host Ryan Bridge to tell him what was happening at the parliament complex. “We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here Ryan, quite a decent shake here,” she said, looking up and around the room. “But, um, if you see things moving behind me.” She continued with the interview and noted she was in a structurally sound place and not under any light fixtures. The quake was felt by thousands of New Zealanders getting ready to start their work weeks, but no major damage was reported.
