PITTSBURGH -(WPXI) – A barge struck a boat overnight on the Ohio River and three people had to be rescued, authorities said. The collision happened shortly after midnight Tuesday below the Point and above the West End Bridge. At one point, the boat was stuck under the front right side of the barge. According to public safety officials, the barge was empty and riding high, so the captain was not aware the boat was caught under it. When barges are empty, they float up and are 10-feet high, meaning the captain can’t see when something’s too close. But when barges are filled, the captain’s line of sight is OK. The barge was slowed and stopped after the captain saw and heard River Rescue’s lights and sirens, officials said. The three adults who were on the boat called 911. River Rescue got them onto the River Rescue boat and took them to the North Shore boathouse outside PNC Park. Paramedics then took them to a hospital to be evaluated. A woman who was on the boat said she and her two brothers had stopped on the river to charge their boat battery and none of them noticed the barge until it came right at them and slammed into the boat. The woman claims they blared their SOS horn, but the barge still pushed them down the river a couple hundred feet. She also says the lights on the boat were on at the time.

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Excitement is in the air as Pittsburgh gets ready to host the NFL Draft in two years. A new city resolution would pledge $1 million in taxpayer money to support the event. But, it has raised concerns with critics who say there isn’t enough money in the city’s budget to support the bill. “I was assured this morning before our meeting and council session that it is not taking away from any existing city operations or city programs,” said Khari Mosely when asked where the proposed funding would come from. The plan proposed by Mosley would allocate $1 million to VisitPITTSBURGH, the agency that is currently coordinating the multi-billion-dollar 2026 NFL Draft event. VisitPITTSBURGH shared that with 50 million viewers worldwide, the exposure and anticipated economic impact will far outpace the initial investment. “Previous destinations have reported anywhere from $120 to upwards of $213 million in economic impact and we expect Pittsburgh to be well within that range,” said Emily Hatfield, the senior director of communications for VisitPITTSBURGH. However, some city leaders are concerned about spending taxpayer money. Councilman Anthony Coghill said the city is already offering in-kind donations such as venue space, emergency responders, and public works services free of charge.

State Police say a 30-year-old Pittsburgh man was struck and killed by a tractor trailer while he was walking along the westbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Beaver County early Wednesday morning. They say Devin Glace was first struck by a tractor-trailer before being hit by two more vehicles just before 3 o’clock. The drivers of the tractor-trailer and one of the other two vehicles stopped. However, police said the third driver kept going. Authorities said the vehicle of the driver who did not stop was described as a “green Peterbilt long wood trailer with grain on top.” Anyone with information about that vehicle is asked to call Pennsylvania State Police in Gibsonia at 724-443-5907. All westbound lanes of the turnpike were closed between Cranberry and New Castle until about 8 a.m. (Photo: WPXI)

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The jury seated for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s trial in George Floyd’s death includes a chemist, a nurse, a social worker and a grandmother. It’s a racially mixed group – with six people who identify as Black or multiracial. Almost all have seen the bystander video of Floyd pinned on the street that fanned worldwide outrage. And some have ties to police. Although many said they had formed views of Chauvin’s conduct, all said they could set those aside and decide the case based on evidence. Opening statements are Monday in Minneapolis.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Nearly two weeks ago the White House urged governors to ensure that every nursing home resident and staff member be tested for the coronavirus within 14 days. It’s not going to happen. A review by The Associated Press found that at least half of the states are not going to meet White House’s Monday deadline and many aren’t even bothering to try. Many say the logistics, costs and manpower needs are too great to accomplish the testing goal in a two-week window. Some say they need another week or so, while others say they need much more time.

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) – Hundreds of people held vigil outside the National Rifle Association’s headquarters in Virginia for the dozens slain in mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Gun control groups including March for Our Lives organized Monday’s “Vigil for Remembrance and Change,” which sought to honor the dead and call for stronger gun laws. The back-to-back weekend shootings cost a total of 31 lives and left more than 50 people wounded. Vigil attendees held moments of silence punctured by the recitation of victim names, including those gunned down in Chicago and the 13 black transgender women killed so far this year. Democratic Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton joined the crowd in decrying political inaction. The NRA has said it wouldn’t take part in “politicizing” the shootings, but would work to find solutions.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans spent a bit more at retailers last month, providing a small boost to the economy just as the Federal Reserve considers how much to cut its key interest rate. The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that retail sales ticked up 0.1% from July to August, after jumping the most in 18 months the previous month. Online retailers, sporting goods stores, and home and garden stores reported higher sales. The data indicate that consumers are still able to spend more despite the cumulative impact of three years of excess inflation and higher interest rates.
