WASHINGTON (AP) – Former President Donald Trump’s tax returns are expected to be released by the House Ways and Means Committee on Friday. That’s according to a congressional aide, who was not authorized to discuss the timing of the release publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Friday is the next time the House is scheduled to meet for a routine pro forma session. The Democratic-controlled committee voted last week to release Trump’s returns, with some redactions of sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers and contact information. The new Congress, with Republicans in control of the House, begins Jan. 3.

Federal safety officials aren’t ready to give back authority for approving new planes to Boeing when it comes to the large 787 jet, which Boeing calls the Dreamliner. The plane has been plagued by production flaws for more than a year. The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday it will retain authority to issue certificates for each new 787 until it’s confident that Boeing is consistently churning out Dreamliners that meet federal design standards. For years, the FAA has relied on employees of aircraft manufacturers to perform key safety checks and certify the airworthiness of individual planes. That practice came under fire after two deadly crashes involving Boeing 737 Max jets.

BERLIN (AP) – Germany is extending its lockdown measures by another month and imposing several new restrictions in an effort to drive down the rate of coronavirus infections. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced early Tuesday that the measures include largely shutting down public life for several days over Easter. Speaking after a lengthy video call with the country’s 16 state governors, Merkel stressed that regions with high rates of infection would need to pull an “emergency brake” agreed at a previous meeting three weeks ago. Amid concern over the rise in Germans traveling abroad on holidays, authorities also agreed on a blanket requirement for air travelers to be tested for COVID-19 before boarding a flight to Germany.

In a departure from contentious meetings for Cecil Township Supervisors, the most recent meeting was busy but very civil in tone. Highlighting a busy agenda was the passage of an ordinance to allow township fire departments to receive reimbursements for their expenditures from their rescue responses. Chief William Cass of the Cecil #1 Fire Company explained that all Cecil Twp Fire Companies are now authorized to seek reimbursement from insurance companies for services rendered during a rescue. These reimbursements are being sought for rescues when the companies are called out to assist victims especially on Interstate 79 where services are for victims of other places and not residents of the township. It is not the intent of the reimbursements to be used against residents. In other township business, supervisors created a Capital Parks Account to allow long term savings for park improvements. Chairperson Cindy Fisher explains that this account is different from the General Park Improvement Account as the monies deposited here will accrue from year to year and not get swept back into the township’s general fund at the end of the fiscal year. Upon creation of the account, supervisors authorized a $150,000 transfer from the General Park Improvement Account.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has declined to endorse Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for president, saying neither candidate has sufficient support from the 1.3 million-member union. Vice President Harris met Monday with a panel of Teamsters, having long courted organized labor and made support for the middle class her central policy goal. Trump also met with a panel of Teamsters and even invited President Sean M. O’Brien to speak at the Republican National Convention, where the union leader railed against corporate greed. The Teamsters said Wednesday that internal polling of its members showed Trump with an advantage over Harris.

(AP) – Sugar prices are soaring in many places. That’s largely due to production shortfalls in key exporters India and Thailand that are partly blamed on the El Nino. The U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization is predicting a 2% decline in production this year. Increasingly, sugar is being used for biofuels like ethanol, so global sugar buffer stocks are at their lowest since 2009. Brazil’s harvest next year will help, but that’s months away. Experts say the concern is over shortfalls in the next few months, especially for poor countries that depend on expensive sugar imports, like much of sub-Saharan Africa.

DALLAS (AP) – Southwest Airlines scrubbed thousands of flights again in the aftermath of the massive winter storm that wrecked Christmas travel plans across the U.S., and the federal government said it would investigate why the company lagged so far behind other carriers. A day after most U.S. airlines had recovered from the storm, Southwest called off 2,500 more flights on the East Coast by midday Tuesday. The FlightAware tracking service reported that those flights accounted for more than 80 percent of the 3,000 trips that got canceled nationwide Tuesday. The chaos seemed certain to continue. The airline also scrubbed 2,500 flights for Wednesday and nearly 1,000 for Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A second CNN executive is exiting the cable news network in the wake of an internal investigation. Allison Gollust’s resignation follows the company’s conclusion of its inquiry concerning ex-anchor Chris Cuomo and his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Gollust’s exit followed the resignation earlier this month of CNN President Jeff Zucker. According to a memo from Jason Kilar, CEO of CNN parent WarnerMedia, the investigation found violations of company policies, including CNN’s news standards and practices, by Zucker, Gollust, and Chris Cuomo. Gollust fired back, saying the memo was an attempt at retaliation intended to distract attention from its own actions.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling for a halt to all violence against Asians and people of Asian descent. U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said “the secretary-general is profoundly concerned” about the targeting of Asians during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said “the world has witnessed horrific deadly attacks, verbal and physical harassment, bullying in schools, workplace discrimination, incitement to hatred in the media and on social media platforms, and incendiary language by those in positions of power.” The statement follows last Tuesday’s rampage at three Atlanta-area massage businesses that killed eight people, six of them Asian-American women.
