Biden Leads Democratic Polls

August 11, 2019 7:57 am

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Three months after announcing his White House bid, Joe Biden remains atop early primary polling. He’s been buoyed by a long history with voters and a belief among many of them that his decades of experience best position him to defeat President Donald Trump. But Biden’s rivals remain confident that his frequent fumbles will eventually catch up to him.
Biden’s standing in the race is the subject of much debate within the Democratic Party. Advisers to other campaigns contend that polling at this stage is often fluid, reflecting little more than name recognition. Biden aides frequently note that Trump led polls throughout the summer of 2015 and never relinquished his lead. What is clear is that some of Biden’s rivals see an imperative to begin taking him on aggressively.

Washington County Election Results Certified

November 28, 2023 2:13 am

The results of the November General Election in Washington County have been certified.  Washington County Elections Director Melanie Ostrander says the results were certified Monday afternoon and with the exception of one race, there were no issues.  A petition had been filed last week by Mark Kennison, an Independent candidate who lost to Democrat Jo Jo Burgess by just thirty-nine votes in the race for Washington Mayor. Kennison had filed the petition to challenge the results, citing what he said were irregularities on Election Day. However, when the case went to court, Kennison withdrew the petition, setting the stage for Jo Jo Burgess to be sworn in as the city’s first black mayor in January.  As for the only other issue, Ostrander says there was a tie for the fourth seat on East Washington Borough Council.  As a result, she says lots will be drawn on December 8th at noon and the winner will take the fourth seat.  The drawing will be between Democrats Mumbi Mundia-Howe and Kent James.

CINCINNATI — Days after collapsing and requiring CPR on-field in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin remains in critical condition but is showing signs of improvement. Jordon Rooney, a spokesman for the family and a friend of Hamlin’s, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the player’s recovery is moving in “a positive direction” and “we all remain optimistic.” He told the AP he could not go into further detail, citing a request by Hamlin’s family. The Buffalo Bills said Wednesday afternoon on Twitter that Hamlin remained in the intensive care unit in critical condition “with signs of improvement noted yesterday and overnight.” The team said Hamlin is expected to remain in the ICU. “My greatest fear has flashed in front of me that particular moment, but to the goodness and Grace of God, Damar is still here and he’s still fighting,” Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations, told reporters in a news conference on Wednesday, according to CNN. Rooney told the AP that Hamlin’s family was staying positive and was touched by the outpouring of support from fans and fellow athletes.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – The United States and France are criticizing mercenaries in the Central African Republic from the Russian security company Wagner, accusing them of executing civilians, attacking U.N. peacekeepers and targeting predominantly Muslim communities. Russia never mentioned mercenaries or Wagner in responding Tuesday at a U.N. Security Council meeting, but said that “Russian specialists” are working “successfully” in the African nation at the request of its government. The exchange came at a council session at which outgoing U.N. special representative Mankeur Ndiaye said that “the Central African people are still awaiting the dividends of peace.”

Protests Force Target, CVS & Walmart To Close Stores

Target, CVS, Apple and Walmart have all temporarily closed certain locations due to protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week. In some cases stores were damaged. Minneapolis-based Target closed or shortened hours at more than 200 of its stores over the weekend, but it says most would reopen Sunday or Monday. Six will remain closed for an extended period due to damage from the protests. CVS has closed stores in 20 states and the District of Columbia. Apple and Walmart also closed some locations, but wouldn’t say how many. Floyd, who was black, died after a white Minneapolis police officer used his knee to pin his neck down for several minutes.
