KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Egyptian officials say Hamas is preparing to release 14 Israeli hostages Saturday for 42 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel in the second swap on the second day of a four-day cease-fire. The truce has allowed critical humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. Hamas on Friday released 24 of the about 240 hostages taken during its Oct. 7 attack on Israel that triggered the war. Those freed from captivity in Gaza were 13 Israelis, 10 Thais and a Filipino. The truce has allowed more deliveries of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, where civilians have been desperate for food, water, medicine and fuel. Work Continues To Open Suez Canal

March 28, 2021 7:44 am

SUEZ, Egypt (AP) — Two additional tugboats sped Sunday to Egypt’s Suez Canal to aid efforts to free a skyscraper-sized container ship wedged for days across the crucial waterway, even as major shippers increasingly divert their boats out of fear the vessel may take even longer to free. The massive Ever Given, a Panama-flagged, Japanese-owned ship that carries cargo between Asia and Europe, got stuck Tuesday in a single-lane stretch of the canal. In the time since, authorities have been unable to remove the vessel and traffic through the canal — valued at over $9 billion a day — has been halted, further disrupting a global shipping network already strained by the coronavirus pandemic. The Dutch-flagged Alp Guard and the Italian-flagged Carlo Magno, called in to help tugboats already there, reached the Red Sea near the city of Suez early Sunday, satellite data from MarineTraffic.com showed. The tugboats will nudge the 400-meter-long (quarter-mile-long) Ever Given as dredgers continue to vacuum up sand from underneath the vessel and mud caked to its port side, said Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, which manages the Ever Given. Workers planned to make two attempts Sunday to free the vessel coinciding with high tides, a top pilot with the canal authority said.

China Conducting Trials With Aircraft Carrier

May 30, 2020 4:11 am

BEIJING (AP) – China’s Defense Ministry says the navy’s only entirely home-built aircraft is carrying out sea trials to test weapons and equipment and enhance crew training. Ministry spokesperson Ren Guoqiang says the exercises are being conducted as planned, apparently unaffected by the country’s coronavirus outbreak. The highly secretive Chinese military was credited with aiding in the response to the epidemic in the epicenter of Wuhan earlier this year, but no information has been released about cases among military personnel or any change in the armed forces’ readiness status. The U.S. Navy, in contrast, saw a public controversy over the spread of the coronavirus aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the firing of the aircraft carrier’s skipper in April.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) – Authorities say the 21-year-old man accused of carrying out the deadly mass shooting at an El Paso Walmart confessed after surrendering and said he had been targeting Mexicans.  El Paso Detective Adrian Garcia said in an arrest warrant affidavit that Patrick Crusius emerged with his hands up from a vehicle stopped at an intersection shortly after last Saturday’s attack and told officers, “I’m the shooter.”  He says Crusius later waived his Miranda Rights and agreed to speak with detectives, telling them he was targeting Mexicans during his attack.  Twenty-two people were killed in the attack and about two dozen others were wounded. Many of the dead had Latino last names and eight of them were Mexican nationals. El Paso sits on the border with Mexico. (Photo:  CNN)

Violent Crime In U.S. Decreased Last Year

September 23, 2024 5:52 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — Violent crime in the US dropped again in 2023, according to FBI statistics that show a continued trend downward after a coronavirus pandemic-era crime spike. The report released Monday shows overall violent crime ticked down an estimated 3% in 2023 from the year before. Murders and non-negligent manslaughter dropped nearly 12%. Violent crime has become a talking point on the campaign trail, with former President Donald Trump falsely claiming during the recent presidential debate that crime is “through the roof” under President Joe Biden’s administration. Even amid the 2020 surge, violent crime is down dramatically from the 1990s.

Medina Spirit Stripped Of Kentucky Derby Title

February 21, 2022 4:59 pm

(AP) – Medina Spirit has been stripped of the victory in last year’s Kentucky Derby and Mandaloun has been declared the winner in a ruling by state racing stewards. The since-deceased Medina Spirit tested positive after the race last May for a steroid, betamethasone, that is legal in Kentucky but banned on race day. Medina Spirit finished half a length ahead of Mandaloun in the race, giving trainer Bob Baffert what was then his seventh Kentucky Derby title. Baffert was subsequently banned for two years by Churchill Downs following the positive test. Monday’s decision by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission makes Medina Spirit the second horse in the 147-year history of the race to be disqualified for a banned substance.  (Photo:  AP)
