WASHINGTON (AP) – The top two congressional Democrats say President Donald Trump has assured them he will review a House-passed bill that expands federal background checks for gun sales. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer say they spoke separately to Trump on Thursday. Trump called the leaders individually after Pelosi sent him a letter asking him to order the Senate back to Washington immediately to consider gun violence measures. In a joint statement, Schumer and Pelosi say they told Trump the best way to address gun violence is for the Senate to take up and pass the House-passed bill. They say Trump “gave us his assurances that he would review the bipartisan House-passed legislation and understood our interest in moving as quickly as possible to help save lives.”

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — It’s not a great moment in world affairs right now. The world is fragmented. Conflicts and crises are raging. It’s against this backdrop that world leaders are attending this week’s annual U.N. gathering. Antonio Guterres, the head of the United Nations, is challenging them to work together not just on all the problems but on modernizing international institutions to prepare for the future. Guterres is leading a “Summit of the Future” over the next couple days to tackle that. The U.N. chief told reporters last week that international challenges are many and varied and are moving faster than our ability to solve them.

An early morning fire in Morris Township has injured at least one person. Washington County 911 says the blaze was reported just before 3 a.m. at a home along Lemon Hill Road. Dispatchers tell WJPA News one female was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. Her identity and condition were not available. Fire crews from numerous departments were called to the two-story home. There is no word on the cause of the fire at this time.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Governor Kathy Hochul was sworn in for her first elected term on Sunday, making history as the first woman elected to the position in the state. The Democrat, launching her term as the 57th governor of New York, said her goals were to increase public safety and to make the state more affordable. After she took the oath of office at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, Hochul said “right now there are some fights we have to take on… First we must and will make our streets safer.” She also called for making the state more affordable, citing the high cost of living.

(WPIX) – Outages for Pennsylvanians trying to file unemployment claims are expected to last until Monday night, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. The intermittent outages are due to “routine system maintenance” that began Saturday, limiting public access to both online and phone systems. Because of the outages, the department said it plans to have additional staff working extended hours Tuesday to Thursday to help people affected by the downtime. The weekend outage is the latest hurdle for people who file for unemployment compensation. Earlier in February, the Department of Labor and Industry scrapped its customer service ticketing system. Due to reported fraud, the department also had to begin offering free credit monitoring to anyone who filed a claim since June 2021.

A young woman had to be rescued from Peters Lake Park Friday morning after her kayak capsized. Washington County 9-1-1 dispatchers say it happened around 7:30 a.m. A witness says she spotted a life jacket in the water when she arrived at the lake and then saw the woman clinging to the vessel and yelling for help. First responders then arrived on the scene and used a motorized boat to get to the woman because of the strong winds and white caps on the water. Peters Township Fire Chief Michael Mclaughlin tells WJPA News that the woman’s life vest came off when the vessel flipped and she went into the water. 9-1-1 dispatchers say the unidentified woman was transported to Washington Hospital but we have no word on her condition.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The tensions between the Trump administration and China are growing. The administration may soon expel thousands of Chinese graduate students and impose other sanctions against Chinese officials. These are the latest signs of escalating tensions over trade, the coronavirus pandemic, human rights and the status of Hong Kong. President Donald Trump says he intends to make an announcement about China on Friday. Officials say he is considering a proposal to revoke the visas of Chinese students affiliated with educational institutions in China that are linked to the People’s Liberation Army or Chinese intelligence. The officials were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Surveillance video shows a woman defending herself against a man with two knives who attacked and wounded her during a stabbing rampage that left four people dead in two Southern California cities. The footage released Thursday by Garden Grove police shows the woman seated in a small insurance office when a man in a blue hoodie approaches her and pulls out the knives. As the man repeatedly slashes her, the woman puts her hands up and then backs away and hides under a desk. The man then flees. The 54-year-old woman survived. She was not identified. Zachary Castaneda was arrested Wednesday after a two-hour series of stabbings and robberies. Investigators haven’t identified a motive. Police say he targeted his victims randomly. Public defenders who represent Castaneda in other cases did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

NAHARIYA, Israel (AP) — Hezbollah has launched more than 100 rockets across a wider and deeper area of northern Israel. Some of the rockets landed near the city of Haifa. The sides appeared to be spiraling toward all-out war following months of escalating tensions. The rocket barrage overnight and into Sunday set off air raid sirens. It sent thousands of people scrambling into shelters. The Israeli military said rockets had been fired “toward civilian areas.” The situation pointed to a possible escalation after previous barrages had mainly been aimed at military targets. Israel launched hundreds of strikes on what it said were militant targets. One person was killed and another wounded in southern Lebanon. At least four people were wounded by shrapnel in Israel.
