CHARLESTON, W. Va. (AP) – West Virginia’s governor has fired 34 correction officer trainees who were photographed giving a Nazi salute, and he fired their instructor. He also says four instructors are being suspended without pay. Republican Gov. Jim Justice announced his decision Monday after receiving a report from state investigators that the trainees regularly gave the Nazi salute “as a sign of respect” for their instructor in the weeks prior to the release of the photo. Its release earlier this month triggered widespread outrage. A three-page executive summary was released Monday detailing the state’s inquiry into the controversial image. (Photo: CNN)

WASHINGTON (AP) – Pressure is building on Republican Kevin McCarthy to determine whether or not he can win over enough fellow Republicans to become House speaker. Thursday is Day 3 of the standoff between McCarthy and 20 colleagues withholding the support he needs for the job. So far, ten votes have failed to elect a speaker. The impasse has left the House unable to fully form and govern. McCarthy said after a round of late talks Wednesday that progress is being made. But Colorado Republican Ken Buck has told the GOP leader to “figure out” the path forward. His right-flank detractors appear intent on waiting him out, as long as it takes.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida House Republicans have advanced a bill to forbid discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, rejecting criticism from Democrats who said the proposal demonizes LGBTQ people. The measure, dubbed by opponents as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, is now set for a final vote in the House after GOP lawmakers refused a series of Democratic amendments Tuesday. The proposal has drawn intense national scrutiny and has served as the one of the latest battlegrounds between the White House and Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running for reelection and is widely considered to be a potential 2024 presidential candidate.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Proposed overhauls of Texas’ power grid that buckled during February’s deadly winter storm are moving through the state legislature. Some of the reforms passed Tuesday in the Texas Capitol include new oversight and mandates that power plants prepare for more extreme weather. More than 100 people died in subfreezing weather in Texas as widespread blackouts spiraled into one of the worst power outages in U.S. history. Many families went without water and heat for days with no indication of when the power might be restored.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – North Korea says leader Kim Jong Un supervised test-firings of an unspecified new weapons system, which extended a streak of weapons demonstrations that are seen an attempt to build leverage ahead of negotiations with the United States. The report by North Korean state media on Sunday came a day after South Korea’s military said it detected the North launching what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea. North Korea’s fifth round of weapons launches on less than three weeks was seen as a protest at the slow pace of nuclear negotiations with the United States and continuance of U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises the North claims are an invasion rehearsal. Experts say the nuclear talks will likely resume after the drills are over later this month.

INDIANA, Pa. — (WPXI) – Former President Donald Trump spoke at the Kovalchick Center on Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s campus for more than 90 minutes, hitting on the economy, immigration, and the assassination attempt that happened at his rally in Butler in July. Trump arrived at a full house of supporters in Indiana for what was his second stop in western Pennsylvania on Wednesday. Trump spent much of his time talking about the economic policy differences between a second Trump term and the Biden/Harris administration. He also spent a large portion of his speech on immigration. He mentioned Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio — and then shifted to a local town. “The 4,000-person town of Charleroi, do people, do you know Charleroi?” Trump asked the audience, which got cheers from some Charleroi residents. Trump then spoke to them from the stage. “Has your beautiful town changed? Yes,” Trump repeated from a supporter. “You can’t do it.” Those comments about Charleroi were first made nearly two weeks ago and drew a rebuke from the borough council president, who said she doesn’t want politicians to use the town to score political points. “It’s composed of lawless gangs, we’re not going to do this,” Trump said. Trump acknowledged Pennsylvania is an important state in this year’s presidential race, noting only 42 days remain until Election Day.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A state lawmaker who’s helping lead the effort to impeach Philadelphia’s elected prosecutor is the newest candidate for Pennsylvania attorney general. Rep. Craig Williams declared his candidacy Tuesday after saying for months that he planned to run for the state’s top law enforcement office. Williams is a Republican who represents part of suburban Philadelphia. He’s also a former federal prosecutor and former U.S. Marine Corps pilot and prosecutor. He’s the third Republican to run. Democrats are facing a five-way primary. The office defended the integrity of Pennsylvania’s 2020 presidential election against repeated attempts to overturn it in state and federal courts by Donald Trump’s campaign and Republican allies.
