November 20, 2023 9:46 am

A challenge has been filed in connection with the City of Washington Mayoral race from the November 7 election. Democrat Jo Jo Burgess won the race by 39 votes over Independent candidate Mark Kennison. Washington County Elections Director Melanie Ostrander says there are 20 petitioners who are all registered voters in the City who voted in the election. Ostrander says they are requesting to review all of the election materials including; voted ballots, voting lists and poll book lists. She says they believe there were activities that occured at the 6th Ward-Precinct 1 that could have caused the election to be swayed towards one candidate. Results show that Burgess beat Kennison by 68 votes in that precinct. A hearing on the challenge will be heard before Washington County Common Pleas Court Judge Gary Gilman Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.

Court Seems Inclined To Reimpose Trump Gag Order

November 20, 2023 5:14 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court appears inclined to reimpose at least some restrictions on Donald Trump’s speech in his election subversion case. But during several hours of arguments on Monday, the judges seemed to wrestle with how to craft a gag order that doesn’t infringe on the former president’s free speech rights or prevent him from defending himself on the campaign trail. The three judges on the panel asked skeptical and at times aggressive questions of attorneys on both sides while weighing whether to put back in place an order from a trial judge that barred Trump from inflammatory comments against prosecutors, potential witnesses and court staff.

Heavy Fighting Around Another Gaza Hospital

November 20, 2023 5:12 am

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Heavy fighting erupted around a hospital in northern Gaza where thousands of patients and displaced people have been sheltering for weeks. Israeli forces are focused on clearing medical facilities that they say Hamas militants use for cover. The advance on the Indonesian Hospital Monday came a day after the World Health Organization evacuated 31 premature babies from Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the territory’s largest. They were among more than 250 critically ill or wounded patients stranded there days after Israeli forces entered the compound. The plight of hospitals is at the heart of warring narratives over the soaring toll among Palestinian civilians in the six-week-old war, which was triggered by Hamas’ Oct. 7 rampage into southern Israel.

School District & Satanic Temple Reach Settlement

November 20, 2023 5:05 am

HELLERTOWN, Pa. (AP) — An eastern Pennsylvania school district has reached a settlement with The Satanic Temple in a lawsuit alleging discrimination against students by barring one of the group’s After School Satan clubs from using a school building. The American Civil Liberties Union said Thursday that the Saucon Valley School District would pay $200,000 in attorney’s fees and will allow the club the same access to school facilities as is provided to other organizations. The group says it doesn’t teach Satanism and views Satan as a literary figure rather than a supernatural being. It also says the clubs are meant as an alternative to religious after-school clubs.

Man Charged For Abandoning Dog At Airport

November 20, 2023 2:54 am

(WPXI) – Police have filed charges against a man who allegedly abandoned a dog at the Pittsburgh International Airport last week. The Allegheny County Police Department said it filed charges against 68-year-old David Mittelberger Sr., of Windsor Heights, West Virginia. Police say these charges come from tips that helped them identify the man in airport surveillance photos as Mittelberger. Police think Mittelberger was traveling to California, but haven’t been able to contact him. Still, they’ve filed charges against him for abandonment of animals, neglect of animals and cruelty to animals. The abandoned dog, whose name is Mikey, is still with Animal Friends. Police say Mikey has an infection in his mouth and needs significant dental care. Officials are working to secure a court order so Mikey can get the care he needs. Although police appreciate the questions and concern for the dog, they say Mikey isn’t up for adoption at this time.

Funeral Services Set For Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter

November 20, 2023 2:42 am

PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — Rosalynn Carter’s tiny hometown of Plains, Georgia, is mourning the death of the former U.S. first lady and global humanitarian, who died Sunday at 96. Lifelong residents and more recent transplants to Plains remembered her Monday as an involved presence around town, despite all that she and former President Jimmy Carter achieved elsewhere. She was instrumental in a Thanksgiving food drive and distribution to the needy, and maintained deep roots in multiple church congregations. It’s not clear whether Jimmy Carter, now 99 and in hospice care, will be able to attend the public commemorations and funeral services to be held in Sumter County and Atlanta next Monday through Wednesday.  (Photo:  ABC)

Governor Josh Shapiro Says He Has Unfinished Business

November 20, 2023 2:13 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro says his list of unfinished business for the state Legislature includes passing a private school voucher program, increasing the minimum wage and approving bills to curb gun violence. Shapiro also said Monday he wants lawmakers to lift limits that prevent adult victims of childhood sexual assault from suing their assailants and institutions. Looking forward to next year, the governor says he wants to address a court ruling that found Pennsylvania unconstitutionally discriminates against its poorest school districts. Speaking at a Pennsylvania Press Club luncheon, Shapiro acknowledged that the politically divided Legislature is a challenge to his agenda.
