Springfield, Ohio Residents Hunker Down

September 19, 2024 5:11 am

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — In the quiet corners of Springfield, Ohio — out of sight of the drumbeat of politicians, journalists, troopers and newly installed security cameras — people are attempting to carry on. Between the morning bomb sweeps of Springfield’s schools and the near daily afternoon media briefings, a hush comes over the city that residents say is uncanny, haunting even. They’re dismayed at being transformed overnight into a target for the nation’s vitriol. Residents say people are hunkered down and hoping the attention sparked by former President Donald Trump spreading unsubstantiated rumors about the city’s legal Haitian immigrants eating house pets during last week’s presidential debate will blow over.

November 20, 2023 5:05 am

HELLERTOWN, Pa. (AP) — An eastern Pennsylvania school district has reached a settlement with The Satanic Temple in a lawsuit alleging discrimination against students by barring one of the group’s After School Satan clubs from using a school building. The American Civil Liberties Union said Thursday that the Saucon Valley School District would pay $200,000 in attorney’s fees and will allow the club the same access to school facilities as is provided to other organizations. The group says it doesn’t teach Satanism and views Satan as a literary figure rather than a supernatural being. It also says the clubs are meant as an alternative to religious after-school clubs.

In brief remarks responding to Monday’s shooting in Colorado, Biden urged Congress to move quickly to close the loopholes in the background check system and to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed Tuesday to bring House-passed legislation that would require background checks for most gun sales and transfers to the Senate floor.

State’s Clergy Abuse Hotline Got 1,900 Calls Over First Year

August 7, 2019 4:06 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Pennsylvania’s top state prosecutor says investigations remain underway after 1,862 calls were made to his office’s clergy abuse hotline in the 12 months since a landmark grand jury report exposed decades of child abuse within the state’s Roman Catholic dioceses.  Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Tuesday that about 90 percent of those calls concerned allegations of abuse or cover-ups within the Catholic church. The rest were about institutions or people outside the Catholic church.  Shapiro calls it “a profoundly impactful experience” that he’s been stopped daily by people who are grateful for the investigation or want to tell him their own stories of victimization.  Pennsylvania dioceses have been evaluating claims and making payments through compensation funds established in the wake of the report.

At least 37 people were killed, including two children, and some 3,000 others were wounded. Israel’s defense minister said Hezbollah will pay an ‘increasing price’ as Israel seeks to return residents to homes near the Lebanon border.

Man Charged For Abandoning Dog At Airport

(WPXI) – Police have filed charges against a man who allegedly abandoned a dog at the Pittsburgh International Airport last week. The Allegheny County Police Department said it filed charges against 68-year-old David Mittelberger Sr., of Windsor Heights, West Virginia. Police say these charges come from tips that helped them identify the man in airport surveillance photos as Mittelberger. Police think Mittelberger was traveling to California, but haven’t been able to contact him. Still, they’ve filed charges against him for abandonment of animals, neglect of animals and cruelty to animals. The abandoned dog, whose name is Mikey, is still with Animal Friends. Police say Mikey has an infection in his mouth and needs significant dental care. Officials are working to secure a court order so Mikey can get the care he needs. Although police appreciate the questions and concern for the dog, they say Mikey isn’t up for adoption at this time.
