Peters Township Lifts Mask Mandate

February 17, 2022 4:04 am

The Peters Township School Board held a special voting meeting on Wednesday night to make amendments to their health and safety plan. In a unanimous roll call vote directors voted to make the wearing of masks in school district buildings “strongly recommended” beginning February 22, 2022. Superintendent Dr. Jeannine French indicated that that date was selected to give staff the time needed to make accommodations for students who were apprehensive about going mask optional and having a student holiday on Friday and Monday give staff time to make those accommodations. French also indicated that the decision to make the amendment followed what they agreed to last month, tying a mask decision to Department of Health numbers regarding community spread of the virus. French does not anticipate masks returning as other mitigation methods can be used in case an outbreak was to occur.

Lawmakers Restart Clock On Amending State Constitution

March 24, 2021 4:08 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Pennsylvania lawmakers are restarting the multi-year clock on amending the state constitution to allow now-adult victims of child sexual abuse to sue their perpetrators or institutions that may have covered it up. The state Senate voted, 44-3, on Tuesday after Republicans blocked efforts to make the change more quickly. The debate has been spurred by investigations into child sexual abuse allegations inside Pennsylvania’s Roman Catholic dioceses. Lawmakers had been on schedule to deliver a proposed amendment to voters in May 18’s primary election before Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration revealed that it had failed to advertise the proposal last year, as it was required to do. Without an emergency amendment, a referendum cannot happen before 2023.

Stormy Weather Puts Damper On SpaceX Launch

May 26, 2020 4:12 am

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – Stormy weather is threatening to delay SpaceX’s first astronaut launch. A SpaceX rocket is scheduled to blast off Wednesday from Florida, carrying a Dragon capsule with NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken to the International Space Station. It will be the first time astronauts launch from the U.S. in nine years and a first for a private company. Forecasters put the odds of acceptable weather at 40%. But that doesn’t include the need for favorable conditions all the way up the U.S. and Canadian coasts and across the sea to Ireland. The Dragon’s emergency escape system can kick in, if necessary, all the way to orbit.

SHALER, Pa. – (WPXI) – A Shaler man is dead after being shot by police outside of his home in the Spencer Woods neighborhood. Police said they were called to the area for reports that the man, Donald Babbit, 49, was acting erratically. When officers arrived, they were informed Babbit had access to guns inside his home. Allegheny County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough said those officers set up a perimeter and began trying to contact him using a loud speaker. Babbit then allegedly walked toward officers waving a handgun in the air. After officers told him to put it down he pointed it at one of them, McDonough said.  That’s when three officers shot Babbit and hit him multiple times. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. Penn Hills School District issued a statement saying Babbit was a teacher in the district: “It is with deep regret that the Penn Hills School District shares the unexpected passing of PHHS teacher Don Babbit earlier today. Don was a beloved member of our staff and had the distinct reputation among students, families, and colleagues as being an exceptional teacher. He will be missed.
