ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — (WPXI) – More than a dozen people say their constitutional rights were violated when they were fired from the county for not getting the COVID-19 vaccine. They’re asking for hundreds of thousand dollars in damages. One year ago, Shane Chesher was fired from Allegheny County for refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine, after his religious exemption was denied. Since then, he and 12 other people have filed a federal lawsuit against the county, claiming that they were wrongfully fired. Last year the county decided to mandate the vaccine for all employees, and if they didn’t get it, they would be fired by Dec. 1, 2021. That’s exactly what happened to Chesher. The basis of the lawsuit claims he and the other former employees were put through public shaming, forced to release private medical information and were not granted a religious exemption. “We are saying to the county, you fired us, and we are going on offense back at you guys,” Chesher explained. “We believe you violated our rights, and we are going to settle this in court.” A county spokesperson said they do not comment on legal matters. The former employees are acting as their own attorneys.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Joe Biden is ordering the release of Trump White House visitor logs to the House committee investigating the riot of Jan. 6, 2021, once more rejecting former President Donald Trump’s claims of executive privilege. The committee has sought a trove of data from the National Archives, including presidential records that Trump had fought to keep private. The records being released to Congress are visitor logs showing appointment information for individuals who allowed to enter the White House on the the day of the insurrection. A Trump spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the decision.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Joe Biden’s administration has tried for weeks to keep the public from seeing images from the border like those released Monday. The new images show immigrant teenagers sleeping on mats in crowded conditions, separated in groups by plastic partitions. The administration steadfastly refuses to call the detention of more than 15,000 children in U.S. custody a crisis. But it has stymied most efforts by outsiders to decide for themselves. Officials have barred nonprofit lawyers who conduct oversight from entering a Border Patrol tent where thousands of children and teenagers are detained. And federal agencies have refused or ignored dozens of requests from the media for access to detention sites.

PITTSBURGH -(WPXI) – A barge struck a boat overnight on the Ohio River and three people had to be rescued, authorities said. The collision happened shortly after midnight Tuesday below the Point and above the West End Bridge. At one point, the boat was stuck under the front right side of the barge. According to public safety officials, the barge was empty and riding high, so the captain was not aware the boat was caught under it. When barges are empty, they float up and are 10-feet high, meaning the captain can’t see when something’s too close. But when barges are filled, the captain’s line of sight is OK. The barge was slowed and stopped after the captain saw and heard River Rescue’s lights and sirens, officials said. The three adults who were on the boat called 911. River Rescue got them onto the River Rescue boat and took them to the North Shore boathouse outside PNC Park. Paramedics then took them to a hospital to be evaluated. A woman who was on the boat said she and her two brothers had stopped on the river to charge their boat battery and none of them noticed the barge until it came right at them and slammed into the boat. The woman claims they blared their SOS horn, but the barge still pushed them down the river a couple hundred feet. She also says the lights on the boat were on at the time.

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Excitement is in the air as Pittsburgh gets ready to host the NFL Draft in two years. A new city resolution would pledge $1 million in taxpayer money to support the event. But, it has raised concerns with critics who say there isn’t enough money in the city’s budget to support the bill. “I was assured this morning before our meeting and council session that it is not taking away from any existing city operations or city programs,” said Khari Mosely when asked where the proposed funding would come from. The plan proposed by Mosley would allocate $1 million to VisitPITTSBURGH, the agency that is currently coordinating the multi-billion-dollar 2026 NFL Draft event. VisitPITTSBURGH shared that with 50 million viewers worldwide, the exposure and anticipated economic impact will far outpace the initial investment. “Previous destinations have reported anywhere from $120 to upwards of $213 million in economic impact and we expect Pittsburgh to be well within that range,” said Emily Hatfield, the senior director of communications for VisitPITTSBURGH. However, some city leaders are concerned about spending taxpayer money. Councilman Anthony Coghill said the city is already offering in-kind donations such as venue space, emergency responders, and public works services free of charge.

State Police say a 30-year-old Pittsburgh man was struck and killed by a tractor trailer while he was walking along the westbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Beaver County early Wednesday morning. They say Devin Glace was first struck by a tractor-trailer before being hit by two more vehicles just before 3 o’clock. The drivers of the tractor-trailer and one of the other two vehicles stopped. However, police said the third driver kept going. Authorities said the vehicle of the driver who did not stop was described as a “green Peterbilt long wood trailer with grain on top.” Anyone with information about that vehicle is asked to call Pennsylvania State Police in Gibsonia at 724-443-5907. All westbound lanes of the turnpike were closed between Cranberry and New Castle until about 8 a.m. (Photo: WPXI)
