Cecil Twp Reorganizes, Addresses Trash Concerns

January 4, 2023 4:06 am

Cecil Township Supervisors held their reorganization meeting and went right into business for the new year. Supervisor Chairwoman Cindy Fisher retained the position of Chairwoman and Frank Egizio will once again serve as Vice Chairman. As the business meeting began, Fisher addressed the audience regarding resident’s concerns with their new trash collector County Hauling. Fisher addressed early concerns with improper mailings sent out by County Hauling that they say was the fault of a third party printing company and are working to correct any errors. Fisher went on to describe phone conversations with the company on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. She told residents that County Hauling came through when they were notified that it would be necessary for them to collect trash that was left behind by the previous hauler Waste Management due to technical difficulties. She said County Hauling was prepared and handled the additional load. Fisher made clear that if anyone has any issue with County Hauling, they should call the township or reach out to supervisors by phone, email or “Official Facebook Pages” for the township or supervisors and not to complain on group pages that the township is not responsible for. Fisher stated that they owe the company the opportunity to show that they can perform the job.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Federal investigators say a helicopter carrying five passengers on a heli-skiing trip in Alaska crashed into a mountain and then rolled downhill nearly 900 feet. The pilot and four of the five passengers on board died in the crash, including billionaire Petr Kellner, the richest man in the Czech Republic. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash just north of Anchorage on Saturday night. The crash site is only accessible by helicopter because of the rugged terrain and snowy conditions.

National Guard was called in as pockets of violence and vandalism erupted during a second straight night of protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and President Donald Trump’s response to it. Hundreds of people converged on the White House and marched along the National Mall, chanting “Black Lives Matter,” “I can’t breathe” and “No justice, no peace.” Protesters threw water bottles, traffic cones, scooters, even tear gas cans at police lines. They set fire to a car and a trash bin and smashed windows, including at Bay Atlantic University. “What are you doing? That’s a school,” one man yelled. An American flag hanging at the Export-Import Bank was taken down, burned and replaced with a Black Lives Matter banner. The D.C. demonstration was one of several around the country responding to the death of Floyd, a black man who died in police custody.

China Waiting Out Hong Kong Protests

August 10, 2019 9:21 am

BEIJING (AP) – China has dismissed Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters as clowns and criminals while bemoaning growing violence surrounding the monthslong demonstrations.
That’s partly out of concern that protesters’ demands for expanded democracy could inspire like-minded officials and intellectuals on the mainland. Still, experts say, China shows no signs of preparing for a major crackdown, content to ignore the protests in the hopes that violence will turn Hong Kong’s silent majority against the movement. The protests also come at a sensitive time for President Xi Jinping, who after removing term limits last year effectively made himself leader for life. That has intensified criticism over his concentration of power even as his propaganda machine relentlessly promotes his achievements ahead of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic on Oct. 1.
