HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Josh Shapiro says he’ll appeal a court ruling that blocked a state regulation to make Pennsylvania’s power plant owners pay for their planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. Still, the Democrat on Tuesday urged lawmakers to get to work on a better alternative. In a statement, Shapiro didn’t pledge to enforce the regulation, should his administration win the appeal at the state Supreme Court. His administration says his appeal rests on the need to preserve executive authority. The court case revolves around the centerpiece of former Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to fight global warming and make Pennsylvania the first major fossil fuel-producing state to adopt a carbon-pricing program.

NEW YORK (AP) – Barbara Walters was that rarest of TV personalities: a cultural fixture. For more than a half-century, she was on the air, placing in front of her audience world figures, big shots and celebrities whose names and faces might have changed from year to year. But hers never did. She first found her way to prominence in a visually oriented business where, typically, women were adornments or otherwise secondary. Walters death at age 93 was announced Friday. Late in her career, she gave infotainment a new twist with “The View,” which she considered the “dessert’ of her career. (Photo: ABC News)

WASHINGTON (AP) – A lawyer for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign who was charged by special counsel John Durham with lying to the FBI during a 2016 meeting has asked a judge to dismiss the indictment, calling it a case of “extraordinary prosecutorial overreach.” Lawyers for Michael Sussmann say that if the indictment is allowed to proceed, it would “risk criminalizing ordinary conduct, raise First Amendment concerns, dissuade honest citizens from coming forward with tips, and chill the advocacy of lawyers who interact with the government.” Durham is investigating potential government misconduct during the early days of the investigation into potential coordination between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Joe Biden has opened his first formal news conference with a nod toward the improving picture on battling the coronavirus, but he was immediately pressed on thorny issues, like immigration and voting rights, now testing his administration. Biden doubled his original goal on COVID-19 vaccines by pledging that the nation will administer 200 million doses by the end of his first 100 days in office. The administration had met Biden’s initial goal of 100 million doses earlier this month – before even his 60th day in office – as the president pushes to defeat a pandemic that has killed more than 545,000 Americans and devastated the nation’s economy.

HARRISBURG, Pa — A new children’s health condition linked to COVID-19 has now popped up in Pennsylvania, health officials said. The illness is called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The condition’s symptoms include a persistent fever that is often relatively high temperature, rash, change in skin color, swollen lymph nodes, red eyes and abdominal pain. Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said Tuesday at a news conference that the Department of Health was aware of 17 reports of the disease in the state. Nine of those have been confirmed, two were determined to not be cases of MIS-C and the remaining six are still being investigated. New York City reported the first cases in the country in April. They now have more than 100 cases and three children have died. Researchers said early treatment leads to a full recovery in most cases.zvj

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump has spoken to Jewish donors and an organization gathered to focus on efforts to fight antisemitism. Trump’s appearances Thursday came on the same day that an explosive CNN report detailed how one of his allies running for North Carolina governor made a series of racial and sexual comments on a website where he also referred to himself as a “black NAZI.” Trump said he will be “the best friend Jewish Americans have ever had in the White House.” He did not comment on the allegations against Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will continue its war against Hamas, even if a temporary cease-fire is reached with the Islamic militant group. In comments Tuesday ahead of an expected Cabinet vote on a cease-fire proposal, Netanyahu vowed to press ahead, saying that “We are at war, and we will continue the war” and that Israel “will continue until we achieve all our goals.” The Cabinet was expected to vote on a plan that would halt Israel’s offensive in Gaza for several days in exchange for the release of about 50 of the 240 hostages held by Hamas. Israel has vowed to continue the war until it destroys Hamas’ military capabilities and returns all hostages.

DALLAS (AP) – Southwest Airlines is returning to a relatively normal flight schedule as the focus shifts to making things right with what could be well more than a million passengers who missed family connections or flights home during the holidays, and many of whom are still missing luggage. The Dallas carrier, which had canceled thousands of flights every day this week after a winter storm last weekend, reported less than 40 cancellations early Friday. While that was still more than United, American and Delta combined, it is a step back from one of the most chaotic weeks in aviation history for a single airline. Federal regulators have vowed a rigorous review of what happened at Southwest.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – The U.S. has issued some of its starkest, most detailed warnings yet about how a Russian invasion of Ukraine might unfold. Its Western allies are on high alert for any attempts by the Kremlin to create a false pretext for a new war in Europe. U.S. President Joe Biden sounded unusually dire Thursday. He warned that Washington saw no signs of a promised Russian withdrawal – but instead saw more troops moving toward the border with Ukraine. He said Moscow could invade within days. Western fears focus on an estimated 150,000 Russian troops posted around Ukraine’s borders. The Kremlin insists it has no plans to invade, but it has long considered Ukraine part of its sphere of influence.
