Tim Scott Abruptly Ends Presidential Bid

November 13, 2023 5:20 am

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Tim Scott says he is ending his 2024 bid for president in a move that surprised his donors and stunned his campaign staff. The South Carolina senator made the announcement on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Night in America” with Trey Gowdy. Scott says, “I think the voters who are the most remarkable people on the planet have been really clear that they’re telling me, ‘Not now, Tim.’” The decision comes as Scott continued to struggle in the polls in a field dominated by former President Donald Trump. Scott, the Senate’s only Black Republican, entered the race with more cash than any other Republican candidate but couldn’t find a way to break through.

Military Training Efforts For Ukraine Hit Milestones

November 13, 2023 5:18 am

A FRENCH ARMY BASE, France (AP) — Combat training programs provided by Ukraine’s allies are hitting major milestones even as global attention shifts to the Israel-Hamas war. Foreign training is improving Ukraine’s odds of victory and helping it hold out against the Russian invasion grinding into a second winter. The training also makes concrete allies’ promises to stick with Ukraine for the long haul. The Associated Press was granted access to a training base in rural France last week where instructors put Ukrainians through their paces at the tail-end of a four-week training course. French trainers say they have learned through experience that it’s unwise to get too friendly with trainees — because some of them are sure to be killed back home.

Thousands Flee Gaza’s Hospital But Others Are Trapped

November 13, 2023 5:17 am

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Thousands of people have fled Gaza’s largest hospital as Israeli forces and Palestinian militants battle outside its gates. But hundreds of patients, including dozens of babies at risk of dying because of a lack of electricity, remained inside on Monday. The head of the World Health Organization says Shifa has been without water for three days and “is not functioning as a hospital anymore.” Both sides have seized on the hospital’s plight as a symbol of the larger war, now in its sixth week. For Palestinians, it evokes the suffering of civilians under Israeli bombardment in a besieged enclave. Israel claims, without providing evidence, that Hamas has a command center in and beneath the medical compound, allegations denied by Hamas and hospital staff.

Trump Wants Trial Televised

November 12, 2023 7:24 am

Donald Trump is pushing for his federal election interference trial in Washington to be televised. He’s joining media outlets that say the American public should be able to watch the historic case unfold. Federal court rules prohibit broadcasting proceedings. But The Associated Press and other news organizations say the unprecedented case of a former president standing trial on accusations that he tried to subvert the will of voters warrants making an exception. The Justice Department argues that the judge overseeing the case doesn’t have the authority to ignore the long-standing nationwide policy against cameras in federal courtrooms. Trump said during a campaign rally Saturday, “I want this trial to be seen by everybody in the world.”

House Republicans Look To Pass Two-step Package

November 12, 2023 7:21 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson has unveiled his proposal to avoid a partial government shutdown next weekend by extending government funding for some agencies and programs until Jan. 19 and continuing funding for others until Feb. 2. The approach is unusual for a stopgap spending bill. Generally, lawmakers extend funding until a certain date for all programs. Johnson decided to go with the combination approach, addressing concerns from GOP lawmakers who want to avoid being presented with a massive spending bill just before the holidays, as has often occurred in the past.

Pope Francis Removes US Conservative Critic As Bishop

November 12, 2023 7:17 am

ROME (AP) — Pope Francis has removed from office the bishop of Tyler, Texas. Bishop Joseph Strickland is a conservative who is active on social media and has been a fierce critic of the pontiff and some of his priorities. A one-line statement from the Vatican says Francis has “relieved” Strickland of the pastoral governance of Tyler and appointed the bishop of Austin as the temporary administrator. Strickland has emerged as a critic of Francis, in particular of his recent meeting on the future of the Catholic Church. Earlier this year, the Vatican sent in investigators to look into Strickland’s governance of the diocese, amid reports he was making doctrinally unorthodox claims.

Heavy Fighting Rages Near Main Gaza Hospital

November 12, 2023 7:13 am

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli strikes have pounded Gaza City as ground forces battle Hamas militants near its largest hospital. Health officials say thousands of medics, patients and displaced people are trapped in Shifa Hospital with no electricity and dwindling supplies. Another hospital, Al-Quds, shut down. Israel’s military says there is a safe corridor for civilians out of Shifa to southern Gaza and that it would assist in moving babies on Sunday. In a televised address, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected growing calls for a cease-fire unless it includes the release of all 239 hostages captured by Hamas in the Oct. 7 rampage that triggered the war. Israel has come under mounting international pressure even from its closest ally, the United States, as the war enters a sixth week.
