Chartiers Township Water Main Break Repaired

January 8, 2025 7:26 am

Crews from Pennsylvania American Water company were called to a large water main break in Chartiers Township Wednesday morning.  Washington County 9-1-1 dispatchers tell WJPA News it happened around five o’clock at North Main Street and Museum Road.  Traffic through the area was reduced to a single lane and the gushing water was shut off before 7:30 a.m.  Officials with Pennsylvania American Water said in an emailed statement that the break was repaired and all service was restored.  They said the break was due to an old pipe line.  Eighteen customers were left without service until around ten-thirty, when final repairs were made.

The ‘America First’ Candidate Turns To Imperialism

January 8, 2025 5:13 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump ran on a return to his “America First” foreign policy platform. But since winning a second term, the president-elect has been embracing a new imperialist agenda. He’s talking about seizing the Panama Canal and Greenland — perhaps by military force — and saying he will use economic coercion to pressure Canada to become the nation’s 51st state. Such talk about undermining sovereign borders and using military force against allies, even if said lightly, is a stunning departure from decades-old norms about territorial integrity. Analysts say it could embolden America’s enemies at a time when Russia is pressing forward with its invasion of Ukraine and China is threatening Taiwan.

January 8, 2025 5:10 am

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will be honored Thursday with the pageantry of a funeral in the nation’s capital and second service in his tiny Georgia hometown that launched a Depression-era farm boy to the world stage. The dual funerals conclude six days of national funeral rights for the 39th president who died Dec. 29 at the age of 100. President Joe Biden will eulogize Carter in Washington. Carter’s other living successors are expected to attend, along with other dignitaries. His afternoon funeral in Plains, Georgia, is a small affair limited to family, friends and members of Maranatha Baptist Church. Carter will be buried alongside his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, in the same town where they were born, lived most of their lives and died.

Southern U.S Shivers As Storm Threatens Snow

January 8, 2025 5:06 am

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A developing winter storm is threatening to drop snow, sleet and freezing rain on parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. National Weather Service meteorologists predicted wintry precipitation across the southern Plains region starting Wednesday night. The new storm comes on the heels of an arctic blast that descended on much of the country east of the Rockies over the weekend. The wintry weather caused car accidents, flight cancellations and school closures. Crews in Arlington, Texas, were preparing the roads for an expected snowstorm Thursday that could make driving tricky ahead of Friday’s Cotton Bowl game between Ohio State and Texas.

Overnight snow showers could leave a fresh coating of snow so watch for slick spots. Friday morning could be the coldest of the winter season so far with single digit morning low temperatures and that cold will set the stage for our next round of snow. Snow showers will break out for most areas after sunset and continue off and on through the night and early Saturday.

At Least Two Dead In Out Of Control Wildfires

January 8, 2025 5:00 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Massive wildfires roaring through the Los Angeles area left neighborhoods in ruins, killed at least two people and threatened landmarks made famous by Hollywood. Desperate residents escaped through flames, hurricane-force winds and towering columns of smoke. Three major blazes that erupted just a day earlier blanketed the city with a dangerous, thick cloud of smoke and ash and destroyed homes across the metropolitan area, from the Pacific Coast inland to Pasadena, home of the famed Rose Parade. One of the fires was the most destructive in the modern history of the city of LA.

Jimmy Carter Lies In State At Capitol Rotunda

January 8, 2025 5:00 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter will continue to lie in state after his remains arrived in Washington a day earlier as part of state funeral rites. The Georgia Democrat and 39th president died Dec. 29 at the age of 100. Carter served as president from 1977-81, winning office as an outsider in the wake of the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal but enduring a rocky four years of economic unrest and international crises that ended with his defeat to Republican Ronald Reagan. Carter will remain at the Capitol until Thursday morning, when he is transported to Washington National Cathedral for a state funeral. President Joe Biden, a longtime Carter ally, will deliver a eulogy. Carter will be buried in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Trial Comes At Rough Time For CNN

January 8, 2025 4:58 am

NEW YORK (AP) — CNN is on trial for libel this week before a jury in Florida, and it comes at a particularly inopportune time for legacy media. The media is already the frequent target of criticism by President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters. Now it will face scrutiny over its operations — and a lawyer for the plaintiff suggested jurors should send a message. At issue is a Navy veteran who helped rescue Afghans at the time of the Taliban takeover in 2021, and how he was included in a story that CNN did about a “black market” of people who faced steep charges to be extracted from the country.

Trial Begins In Fatal Drive-By Shooting In Washington

January 8, 2025 2:45 am

Testimony began Tuesday in the jury trial of Brandon Allen, 33 of Washington. Allen faces homicide, attempted homicide and aggravated assault charges for the May 11, 2022 drive-by killing of Kristin Barfield at her home at 219 Ridge Avenue in the City of Washington. Allen is accused of being the driver of the car during the shooting and also firing a weapon as he drove by. Morning testimony centered on evidence collected at the crime scene. It also included testimony regarding  police interviews with 18 year old Tyriq Moss. He was charged similarly as Allen and was a passenger in Allen’s car. Allen’s defense attorney was questioning police about the validity of the interviews because Moss seemed to be uncooperative in one interview and more cooperative in a second when he was represented by an attorney. The afternoon began with Tyriq Moss relinquishing his 5th amendment rights and agreeing to testify in the trial. It was revealed that Moss would have his criminal charges dropped in exchange for his testimony. Moss testified that it was Allen and Juan Worthey, another passenger in the car that fired the shots at Barfield. The balance of the testimony was from police about video footage of the suspects before and after the shooting at locations along Ridge Avenue. It also included testimony about Allen abandoning his car and the retrieval of a weapon discarded in a wooded area near McDonald, PA. Testimony will resume on Thursday.
