HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Facing the need to win Pennsylvania, Vice President Kamala Harris has sworn off any prior assertion that she opposed fracking. But that hasn’t stopped Republican Donald Trump from wielding her now-abandoned position to win over working-class voters in the key battleground state where the industry means jobs. Last week, in his first appearance in Pennsylvania since Harris became the Democrats’ presumptive nominee, Trump repeatedly warned that Harris would ban fracking and devastate the economy in the nation’s No. 2 natural gas state. Harris called to ban fracking as a presidential primary candidate in 2019.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is launching “Republicans for Harris” as she tries to win over Republican voters put off by Donald Trump’s candidacy. Harris’ team says the program will aim to use well-known Republicans to activate their networks, with a particular emphasis on primary voters who backed former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. The program will kick off with dedicated events this coming week in Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Also, Republicans backing Harris will appear at rallies with the vice president and her soon-to-be-named running mate this coming week. The Harris campaign shared the details of the program first with The Associated Press before the official announcement Sunday.

CHAPIN, S.C. (AP) — Donald Trump says he’s pulling out of a scheduled September debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on ABC and wants them to face off on Fox News. That seems to make it increasingly unlikely that the candidates will confront each other on stage before the November election. In social media posts late Friday, Trump said his agreement to a Sept. 10 debate on ABC “has been terminated” because he’ll no longer face President Joe Biden. Trump says he’ll appear on Fox News on Sept. 4. Harris’ campaign says Trump “is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out.” (Photo: AP)

Governor Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary Dr. Khalid N. Mumin were joined by state and local legislators, higher education leader and students at Cheyney University for a ceremonial bill signing of the higher education reforms that the governor signed into law as part of the 2024-25 budget. The budget for 2024-25 makes for the first significant progress on higher education in three decades and helps give Pennsylvanians the freedom to chart their own course and success that Governor Shapiro hold as his key priorities. This budget creates a new State Board of Higher Education that will coordinate every sector of higher education in Pennsylvania and utilize student-level data to make decisions on what works and what does not. The budget will also invest in public higher education institutions including a $15.7 million increase for community colleges and $35.1 million for schools in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Also, it will make higher education more affordable to students with over $120 million in increased funding for scholarships and grants. The budget also looks to double funding for student teacher stipends for a total of $20 million to ensure student teachers are compensated for their work.
