August 30, 2023 5:03 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian officials are accusing Ukraine of launching what appears to be the biggest nighttime drone attack on Russian soil since the war began 18 months ago. On the same night, the Kremlin’s forces hit Kyiv with what Ukrainian officials called a “massive, combined attack” that killed two people. Drones hit an airport in Russia’s western Pskov region near the border with Estonia and Latvia early Wednesday. Russia’s state news agency Tass reported damage to four Il-76 transport aircraft that can carry heavy machinery. Russia, meanwhile, used drones and missiles in its biggest bombardment of Kyiv in months, Ukrainian authorities said.

State Senate Advances Legislation On Early Primary

August 30, 2023 4:58 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania lawmakers are advancing legislation to hold the state’s 2024 presidential primary earlier. It wouldn’t, however, give the state’s voters much more say in deciding presidential nominees. A Senate committee on Wednesday passed a bill to change the state’s primary from April 23 to March 19. That still leaves highly populous states ahead of Pennsylvania and lawmakers say a final bill could move it later. Many state lawmakers want an early primary date, but not so early that it pushes the primary campaign into the winter holiday season. This year, more lawmakers are motivated to support a change because April 23 is the first day of Passover, a Jewish holiday.

Ex-Proud Boys Leader’s Sentencing Delayed

August 30, 2023 4:51 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Proud Boys national leader Enrique Tarrio’s sentencing for orchestrating the far-right extremist group’s attack on the U.S. Capitol has been delayed until Sept. 5. The judge was sick Wednesday. The Justice Department is seeking a 33-year prison sentence for the 39-year-old Tarrio, who’s from Miami. That’s nearly twice the length of the longest prison term so far among hundreds of Capitol riot prosecutions. Tarrio wasn’t in Washington when Proud Boys members joined thousands of Donald Trump supporters in storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. But federal prosecutors say Tarrio organized and led the group’s assault from afar. Tarrio’s defense lawyers say the Proud Boys had no plans to storm the Capitol.

Consent Agreement Allows Bob’s Tavern To Reopen

August 29, 2023 9:50 am

Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh has signed-off on a consent agreement allowing Bob’s Tavern to reopen.  The long-time establishment along Route 88 in Finleyville was ordered closed as a public nuisance and threat to public welfare following a fatal shooting in the parking lot back in October of last year.   29 year old Jaisen Irwin of Monessen was shot and killed. The consent agreement includes a list of conditions for tavern owner Rudy Zelak.  They include;  installation of security cameras both inside and outside, the purchase of an Identification scanner, employee training, a listing of barred patrons, adjusted and limited business hours and the establishment of a line of communication with the Monongahela Police Department which he must contact on a bi-weekly basis.  Walsh says the establishment has been inspected and can re-open immediately.  Any breach of such terms would allow the District Attorney’s office to close the business.

Former Trump Chief Of Staff Says He Was Doing His Job

August 29, 2023 5:04 am

ATLANTA (AP) — Mark Meadows has testified that actions detailed in a sweeping indictment accusing him of participating in an illegal conspiracy to overturn Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia were all part of his job as White House chief of staff. Meadows made the claim Monday as part of his argument that the case should be moved from a state court to federal court. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones did not immediately rule. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis says Meadows’ actions were political in nature and not performed as part of his official duties.
