SULPHUR, Okla. (AP) — Small towns in Oklahoma are beginning a long cleanup after tornadoes flattened home and buildings and killed at least four people, including an infant. The damage Monday was extensive in the community of Sulphur, where a weekend tornado crumpled many downtown buildings and sheared the roofs off houses across a 15-block radius. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said hospitals across the state reported about 100 injuries, including people apparently cut or struck by debris. White House officials said President Joe Biden spoke to Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt on Sunday and offered the full support of the federal government.

Israeli Airstrikes On Rafah Kill At Least Twenty-Two

April 29, 2024 5:05 am

Palestinian health officials say Israeli airstrikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah have killed at least 22 people, including six women and five children. One of the children killed in the strikes overnight into Monday was just 5 days old. Israel has regularly carried out airstrikes on Rafah since the start of the war and has threatened to send in ground troops, saying Rafah is the last major Hamas stronghold in the coastal enclave. Over a million Palestinians have sought refuge in the city on the Egyptian border. The U.S. and others have urged Israel not to invade, fearing a humanitarian catastrophe. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday begins his seventh diplomatic mission to the Middle East since the Israel-Hamas war began in October.

U.S Official Says Putin Likely Didn’t Order Navalny Death

April 29, 2024 5:10 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence officials have determined that Russian President Vladimir Putin likely didn’t order the death of imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny in February. An official says the U.S. intelligence community has found “no smoking gun” that Putin was aware of the timing of Navalny’s death or directly ordered it. The official says it’s believed Putin was ultimately responsible for the death of Navalny, who endured brutal conditions during his confinement. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter. Navalny was Russia’s best-known opposition politician and died while serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges that he called politically motivated. A month later, Putin won reelection.

Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized

April 28, 2024 7:32 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer says the onetime movie mogul has been hospitalized for a battery of tests after his return to New York City following an appeals court ruling nullifying his 2020 rape conviction. Attorney Arthur Aidala said Weinstein was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his arrival on Friday to city jails. On Thursday, the New York Court of Appeals vacated his conviction after concluding that a trial judge permitted too much evidence not directly related to the charges he faced. The 72-year-old Weinstein has been ailing with a variety of afflictions, including cardiac issues, diabetes, sleep apnea and eye problems.  (Photo:  AP)

Mickey & Minnie In California Want To Unionize

April 28, 2024 7:35 am

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The character performers at Disneyland in California have said they filed a petition for union recognition. The organizing effort comes more than four decades after their peers at Disney’s parks in Florida joined a union. Why now for the California character performers? A lot of it has to do with the Disneyland Resort workers’ proximity to Hollywood. Unlike in Florida where being a character often is a full-time job, many of the character performers in California have other gigs in movies and TV. When many of their Hollywood jobs dried up because of the pandemic and labor strikes, they wanted more dependable scheduling from Disney.  (Photo:  AP)

NFL Draft Sets Attendance Record

April 28, 2024 7:37 am

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has a new attendance record after more than 775,000 fans flooded downtown Detroit for the three-day event. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer revealed at Campus Martius Park during the third and final day of the draft that Detroit had broken the record, and the league later released its estimate of the crowd size. While it will take years to know if this year’s picks delivered for their teams, there’s no doubt that Detroit made the most of an opportunity to host the football spectacle and show 50-plus million viewers the new-look city. Motown beat Music City’s three-day attendance record of 600,000 set in 2019, when fans filled Broadway in Nashville.

(WPXI) – An Ohio man is facing several charges after police say several guns were found hidden in his luggage at Pittsburgh International Airport.  The Allegheny County Police Department (ACPD) says TSA found guns and ammunition concealed in a briefcase around 8:30 p.m. Friday. The briefcase, which was hidden inside another piece of checked luggage, was lined in roofing tape and sheet metal.  In total, ACPD says TSA officers found three handguns, three boxes of ammunition and multiple magazines — all individually wrapped in foil.  ACPD says it was determined the luggage belonged to Luis Rojas Cay, 26, of Youngstown, Ohio. Investigators learned he is currently on probation in Ohio and is not allowed to possess firearms.  Police were able to locate Rojas Cay and take him to the Allegheny County Jail pending a preliminary arraignment on six firearm charges.  The FBI was notified of the incident, and ACPD seized the guns found in the briefcase.
