“Succession” Leads Emmy Nominations

July 12, 2023 5:05 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — HBO dominated the Emmy nominations, with the elite trio of “Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” combining for a whopping 74 nods. “Succession” led all nominees at the Wednesday morning announcements with 24, including acting nominations for series leads Brian Cox, Sarah Snook, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin. “The Last of Us” got 24 nominations, and “The White Lotus” got 23. “Ted Lasso” led all comedy nominees with 21. But the nominations are clouded by the possibility that Hollywood actors will soon join screenwriters on strike.

Iowa Republicans Pass Bill Banning Most Abortions

July 12, 2023 5:03 am

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s Republican-led Legislature has passed a bill banning most abortions after roughly six weeks of pregnancy. The vote came during a marathon special session Tuesday that continued late into the night. Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds immediately said in a statement she would sign the bill on Friday. Reynolds ordered the rare session after the state Supreme Court declined to reinstate a nearly identical law that she signed in 2018. The legislation will take immediate effect with the governor’s signature. It will prohibit almost all abortions once cardiac activity can be detected, which is usually around six weeks of pregnancy and before many women know they are pregnant.

Russian Threat To Pull Out Of Grain Deal Raises Fears

July 12, 2023 5:02 am

LONDON (AP) — Concerns are growing that Russia won’t extend a United Nations-brokered deal that allows grain to flow from Ukraine to parts of the world struggling with hunger. Ships are no longer heading to the war-torn country’s Black Sea ports, and shipments have dwindled. The deal originally reached last summer to ease a global food crisis is up for renewal Monday, and Russian officials say there are no grounds for extending it. They’ve threatened it before, insisting an agreement to facilitate their food and fertilizer shipments hasn’t been applied. But data shows Moscow has been exporting record amounts of wheat. The U.N. is striving to keep the fragile deal intact, with Ukraine to benefit Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia.

NATO Pledges Long-Term Security Assistance For Ukraine

July 12, 2023 5:01 am

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — The United States and other major industrialized nations are pledging long-term security assistance for Ukraine as it continues to fight Russia’s invasion. At the annual NATO summit, G7 countries began laying the groundwork for member nations to negotiate individual security agreements with Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the commitments will be a bridge toward eventual NATO membership for his country. He is desperate for Ukraine to become a NATO member so it can take advantage of the alliance’s security guarantees. But membership for Ukraine has remained elusive at the summit, held this year in Lithuania. Zelenskyy and Biden met separately as well.

North Korea Fires First ICBM In 3 Months

July 12, 2023 4:59 am

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile in three months after it threatened “shocking” consequences to protest alleged spying by U.S. military flights. Some experts say the launch Wednesday was likely the second test-flight of the developmental Hwasong-18 solid-fuel missile, which North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called his most powerful nuclear weapon. South Korea and Japan assessed that the missile flew about 620 miles on a steep angle before landing between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. It came as South Korea’s and Japan’s leaders were attending the NATO summit. Some experts say the launch was meant to hone the missile technology and not directly a protest of any U.S. or South Korean action.

Community Rallies To Help Woman Attacked With Hammer

July 12, 2023 4:52 am

PETERS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — People in Peters Township and beyond are sharing their deepest sympathies, prayers, and dollars, by the thousands, for a woman brutally attacked with a hammer over the weekend. An online fundraiser hit over $100,000 to help Jen Pardini recover from a traumatic brain injury and other serious conditions. According to the police report Jen broke up with 28 year old William Oberschelp and moved out of their shared apartment, and back home with her parents, ten days prior to the attack. Investigators say Oberschelp admitted to taking an Uber to Jen’s parents’ Thompsonville Road house — uninvited — going into her bedroom and waking her up early Saturday morning. The pair went to the garage and began arguing, and Oberschelp admitted to hitting Jen in the back and head with a hammer before kicking her while she was on the ground. Police say he then took her phone and ran off, leaving her lying unconscious in a pool of blood. She was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. When officers came to his apartment Oberschelp told them, “I’m the one you’re looking for,” according to police paperwork. Oberschelp is being held at the Washington County Prison without bond. Peters Township police are asking neighbors to check their surveillance cameras for any video of the attack. Police are also searching for the woman’s phone and anyone who come across it to contact the department and do not touch it.

Washington City Council Sees Internal Insurance Hike

July 12, 2023 2:25 am

Washington City Council is expected to formally approve on Thursday, an increase in the city’s internal insurance rates. Mayor Scott Putnam says the rates for their liability, commercial and property/casualty insurance are going up twelve-percent. Putnam says that translates into about a twenty-thousand-dollar increase over last years premium payment. Putnam attributed the increase to a number of things, including building replacements, losses over the past five years and just in general, the increasing cost of insurance. Putnam says he is hopeful that the increase, once council is ready to work on a new budget, will not be passed on to taxpayers.

Higher Tuition May Be On The Way For State Universities

July 12, 2023 2:22 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A partisan dispute about funding for three of Pennsylvania’s state-related universities may mean higher tuition for in-state students as a budget impasse continues further into the summer. The state government approached two weeks without full spending authority on Tuesday. Funding for Penn State, the University of Pittsburgh and Temple is in limbo. The three universities receive state subsidies. Gov. Josh Shapiro and his Democratic allies have supported raising state aid to the three schools by 7% to $623 million, collectively. Republicans have balked and repeatedly rejected efforts to approve the aid in recent weeks.

Bank Of America Hit With Hefty Fines & Refunds

July 11, 2023 2:50 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Bank of America must reimburse customers more than $100 million and pay $150 million in fines for “double-dipping” on overdraft fees, withholding reward bonuses on credit cards and opening accounts without customer consent. It is one of the highest financial penalties in years against Bank of America, which has largely spent the last 15 years trying to clean up its reputation and market itself to the public as a bank focused on financial health and not on overdraft fee income.  (Photo:  ABC)
