1 Dead, 2 Dozen Injured After Tornadoes Sweep Mississippi

LOUIN, Miss. (AP) — Officials say multiple tornadoes swept through Mississippi overnight, killing one and injuring nearly two dozen. State emergency workers are still working with counties to assess the damage from storms in which high temperatures and hail in some areas accompanied tornadoes. The death and most injuries have been reported in the town of Louin in east Mississippi’s Jasper County. In a Monday morning news release, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said more than 49,000 homes in central Mississippi are without power. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said the tornadoes struck in Jasper County and Rankin County, which borders the capital city of Jackson.

Rescuers Race To Find Missing Sub Near Titanic Site

Rescuers in a remote area of the Atlantic Ocean are racing against time to find a missing submersible carrying five people on a mission to document the wreckage of the Titanic. The submersible named the Titan, part of a mission by OceanGate Expeditions, carried a pilot, a renowned British adventurer, two members of an iconic Pakistani business family and another passenger. Authorities reported the vessel overdue Sunday night about 435 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Every passing minute, however, puts the Titan’s crew at greater risk. The submersible had a 96-hour oxygen supply when it put to sea at roughly 6 a.m. Sunday.

Police Search For Missing Pittsburgh Girl

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Pittsburgh police are asking for the public’s help to find a missing girl. Tyshaya Somerville, 12, was last seen on June 18 at around 2 p.m. at her cousin’s house in the 300 block of Mathews Avenue in Knoxville, according to police. Somerville is described as being 5 feet, four inches tall and 115 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. Somerville is considered to be in danger because of her age. She also doesn’t have her phone on her. Anyone with information should call 9-1-1 or Missing Persons at 412-323-7141.

Chemical Disposal Event Set For Wild Things Park

WASHINGTON — (WPXI)- An event will be held in Washington County to help people get rid of house chemicals. Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) is hosting the event at Wild Things Stadium on June 24. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. People can bring household chemicals such as cleaners, paint, pesticides, mercury thermometers, or pool chemicals that need to be disposed of. All materials should be brought to the event in car trucks or truck beds. A worker will unload the materials. Anyone who disposes of up to 10 gallons or 50 pounds of aerosol cans will need to pay a $20 fee. Loads exceeding that amount will cost an amount decided on-site. Disposal of a fire extinguisher will cost $12 and mercury will cost $15 per pound. Four Charged After Trespassing Inside Century III Mall

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — (WPXI) – Multiple men are facing charges after they allegedly trespassed inside the Century III Mall. West Mifflin Police say Christopher Cross, 27, Brody Lones, 23, Drake Pierce, 22 went through the abandoned mall and filmed video. The video was shared online and police used it to identify them. Kenlein Ogletree, 21, was also charged. Police say Century III Mall property is private property. They also said the area is extremely dangerous and that the men could have been injured. Private property signs are posted in the area.

Search Underway For Missing Sub Visiting Titanic Wreck

(AP) – A search is underway for a missing submersible that carries people to view the wreckage of the Titanic. Canadian officials say the five-person submersible was reported overdue Sunday night about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland and that the search is being led by the U.S. Coast Guard. The owner of the ship that launched the submersible confirmed that it was operated by OceanGate Expeditions, which has been operating annual voyages since 2021 to the wreckage of the iconic ocean liner. In a statement, the company said it is working to bring the crew back safely.

Detroit (AP) — Americans across the country are observing the relatively new Juneteenth federal holiday with festivals, parades, cookouts and other gatherings. On a long holiday weekend seen by many as a reason for a party, others are urging quiet reflection about the end of slavery and the treatment of Black Americans throughout U.S. history. Although end-of-slavery celebrations are new in many areas, in Memphis, where the slave trade once thrived, the Juneteenth holiday has been celebrated since long before it became a designated federal holiday in 2021. This year, Tennessee lawmakers approved it as a state holiday as well. Schools and federal buildings will be closed Monday to observe the holiday.

Blinken & Xi Pledge To Stabilize Ties Between U.S. & China

BEIJING (AP) — The United States and China have pledged to stabilize their badly deteriorated ties during a critical visit to Beijing by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi pronounced himself satisfied with progress made during talks Monday in Beijing. But Blinken says China refused to resume military-to-military communications, a U.S. priority. It remains to be seen whether the countries can resolve their most important disagreements, many of which have international implications. After meeting with Blinken, Xi said he was pleased with the outcome and said the sides agreed to resume a program of understandings he and President Joe Biden agreed to at a meeting in Bali last year.

Two Dead After Small Plane Crash In Cambria County

CAMRBRIA COUNTY, Pa. — (WPXI) – Two people are dead after a twin-engine plane crashed in Cambria County. According to reports, the plane was a Piper PA-30. It crashed into the woods at around 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Cambria County Coroner’s Office said two people were on the plane when it crashed and both were pronounced dead at the scene. The Federal Aviation Association and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Bus Driver Charged With DUI While Driving Pirates

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A bus driver has been arrested on a charge of driving under the influence while transporting the Pittsburgh Pirates from Chicago to Milwaukee for their weekend series with the Brewers. Illinois State Police says the driver was traveling away from officers seeking to escort the bus on its trip to Milwaukee late Thursday. Troopers said they observed more erratic driving and eventually stopped the bus on the right shoulder of Interstate 94 in Chicago. The driver isn’t a Pirates employee but was contracted to drive the team to Milwaukee after the completion of their series with the Cubs.
