WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — President Joe Biden says he believes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “hurting Israel more than helping Israel” in how he is approaching its war against Hamas in Gaza. The U.S. leader expressed support for Israel’s right to pursue Hamas after the Oct. 7 attack, but said of Netanyahu that “he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken.” Biden has for months warned that Israel risks losing international support over mounting civilian casualties in Gaza. The remarks in an MSNBC interview pointed to the strained relationship between the two leaders. Biden said of the Gaza death toll, “it’s contrary to what Israel stands for. And I think it’s a big mistake.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hi, “Oppenheimer.” When Hollywood gathers for the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, the blockbuster biopic is widely expected to overpower all competition — including its release-date companion, “Barbie” — at an election-year Oscars that could turn into a coronation for Christopher Nolan. The Oscars, kicking off on ABC at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday, are springing forward an hour earlier than usual due to daylight saving time. But aside from the time shift, this year’s show is going for many tried-and-true Academy Awards traditions. Jimmy Kimmel is back as host. Past winners are flocking back as presenters. And a big studio epic is poised for a major awards haul.

An arrest has been made in connection with a fire in Monongahela that occurred on Friday morning. According to on the online court docket, Hunter McMahon, 29 of Monongahela was arrested by Monongahela police for causing the fire that burned the Main Street Tavern. According to the criminal complaint, police say McMahon was seen setting fire to a dumpster behind the Great Wall Chinese Restaurant and then behind the Main Street Tavern. According to police video exists of McMahon at the Main Street Tavern. McMahon was preliminarily arraigned and sent to the Washington County Jail on $250,000 bond. ATLANTA (AP) — The 2024 presidential election campaign will pick up Saturday where the 2020 contest left off. Or, more precisely, in a place where it never actually ended. Georgia was so close four years ago that Republican Donald Trump finds himself indicted here for his push to “find 11,780 votes” and overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s victory. Now, fresh off their Super Tuesday domination to set up a near-certain rematch, the two rivals will hold dueling events in a state that both parties see as pivotal to winning in November. There is agreement, at least, that Biden and Trump each have a path to victory — and plenty of obstacles along the way.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has approved a $460 billion package of spending bills in time to meet a midnight deadline for avoiding a shutdown of many key federal agencies. The vote gets lawmakers about halfway home in wrapping up their appropriations work for this budget year. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. Meanwhile, lawmakers are negotiating a second package of six bills, including defense, in an effort to have all federal agencies fully funded by March 22. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says the first bill’s passage will allow agencies to hire more air traffic controllers, give federal firefighters a raise and boost support for homeless veterans, among other things.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A massive floating pier that will allow ships to sail up to Gaza and offload aid will soon sail from the U.S. to the Mediterranean Sea as the U.S. looks at ways to address Gaza’s dire food needs. While Army and Military Sealift Command personnel will be used to get the pier up and running, the Pentagon says no U.S. troops will be on the ground in Gaza. President Joe Biden announced the pier Thursday in his State of the Union speech.

ROSE VALLEY, Pennsylvania (AP) — Fresh off his defiant State of the Union address, President Joe Biden and his senior aides are beginning to barnstorm the country to aggressively sell his vision for a second term to voters. He’s also warning of the Republican alternative. The president will try to ride the post-speech momentum to Pennsylvania and Georgia, two critical swing states that he flipped in 2020 and is rallying to retain in his column this November. He’ll visit Wisconsin and Michigan next week. Biden’s reelection campaign adopted an almost giddy tone Friday after the speech, vowing to stay on the offensive against Donald Trump. Biden would not commit to debating Trump when asked by reporters Friday.

DALLAS (AP) — Once again, most Americans will set their clocks forward by one hour this weekend, losing perhaps a bit of sleep but gaining more glorious sunlight in the evenings as the days warm into summer. How we came to move the clock forward in the spring, and then push it back in the fall, is a tale that spans over more than a century and is one that’s driven by two world wars, mass confusion at times and a human desire to bask in the sun. Washington County Commissioners acquired the Washington County Fireman’s Association Fire Academy on Thursday. The deed transfer for the 32 acre site in Chartiers Twp. was approved unanimously at the commissioners voting meeting on Thursday. Commissioners then approved two measures authorizing advertisement for bids to design and build a “burn building” and to acquire assorted security equipment associated with the facility. Currently, the fire academy is in need of significant updates. While several fire companies and the county SWAT Team still use the facility for fire training, CPR training and other training and continuing education purposes, several fire companies have found other places to train. They point to the condition of the current burn building as a major reason they have moved elsewhere. According to Commissioner Chairman Nick Sherman says that the new academy will make the county an integral training hub. It will be a revenue generator for the county that will allow fire companies from not only Washington County, but all other counties in the region and other states to come in and train. The facility would be able to handle training not only for fire but for police and EMS also.

The State Police Fire Marshall is investigating a fire that gutted the Main Street Tavern on West Main Street in Monongahela early Friday morning. Washington County 911 says the blaze broke out around six o’clock and there were no reported injuries. The fire chief said flames were shooting out of the back door when crews arrived and they had to ventilate the roof in three different areas. At least nine fire companies were called out to help battle the fire. (Photo: WPXI)
