May 22, 2023 4:08 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have a pivotal meeting coming up on the impasse over the debt ceiling. Washington is racing to strike a budget compromise and raise the nation’s borrowing limit in time to avert a devastating federal default. They’re to meet face to face Monday afternoon. After a weekend of start-stop talks, both men appeared upbeat as they face a deadline, as soon as June 1, when the government could run out of cash to pay its bills. Back in the U.S. after the G-7 summit, Biden said his phone call with McCarthy earlier Sunday went well.

Fetterman Tackles Senate Life After Depression Treatment

May 22, 2023 4:06 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Before Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman checked himself in to a hospital for clinical depression in February, he used to walk the halls of the Senate stone-faced and dressed in formal suits. These days, he’s back to wearing the hoodies and gym shorts he was known for before he became a senator. People close to Fetterman say his more relaxed style is a reflection of the progress he’s made after six weeks of inpatient treatment for clinical depression. He was treated with medication and fitted for hearing aids for hearing loss that had made it harder for him to communicate. His hospitalization came less than a year after he had a stroke during his Senate campaign.

LOWER TYRONE TWP, Pa. — (WPXI) – A woman is facing charges after police say she led them on a chase while she had a baby in her vehicle in Fayette County. Pennsylvania state police say they were called to check on a woman who appeared to be passed out or sleeping in her vehicle while in the care of a 6-month-old child. When they arrived they found 31-year-old Nichole Snyder, who took off in her vehicle. Troopers say they tried to stop Snyder without a pursuit for an hour and a half before deeming her a danger to herself, the child and the general public. Eventually, troopers used tire deflation devices to slow the vehicle down and say a “precision immobilization technique” was used to stop it completely. Snyder faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, multiple charges of recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of a child.

DeSantis Asks Judge Be Disqualified From Disney Lawsuit

May 21, 2023 8:05 am

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Gov. Ron DeSantis is asking that a federal judge be disqualified from the First Amendment lawsuit filed by Disney against the Florida governor and his appointees. The DeSantis motion filed Friday claims U.S. District Judge Mark Walker’s prior statements have raised questions about his impartiality on the state’s efforts to take over Disney World’s governing body. Disney’s lawsuit alleges the Republican governor and his appointees violated the company’s right to free speech, as well as the contracts clause, by taking over the special governing district that previously had been controlled by Disney supporters. Walker was nominated to the federal bench in 2012 by President Barack Obama.

Zelenskyy’s in-person appearance in his trademark olive drab underscored the centrality of the war for the G7 bloc of rich democracies. He also held one-on-one talks with several of the leaders just as Russia claimed to have seized control of the eastern city of Bakhmut.

In an effort to get negotiations back on track, Biden plans to call U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from Air Force One on the way back to Washington after a Group of Seven summit in Japan. World leaders at the gathering expressed concern about the dire global ramifications if the United States were to be unable to meet its financial obligations. Biden told reporters: “I’m hoping that Speaker McCarthy is just waiting to negotiate with me when I get home.”
