Harris & Trump Offer Worlds-Apart Contrasts

September 10, 2024 5:04 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — This year’s presidential race is a genuine contest of ideas between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. There are clear differences on taxes, abortion, immigration, global alliances, climate change and democracy itself. Since replacing President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Harris has pledged to chart a new way forward even as she has embraced many of his ideas about the middle class and abortion access. Trump wants to accomplish much of what he couldn’t during his past term in the White House. He wants deeper corporate tax cuts, higher tariffs and more support for American fossil fuel development.

Ukraine Drones Target Russia

September 10, 2024 5:03 am

Officials say over 140 Ukrainian drones targeted multiple Russian regions overnight, including Moscow and surrounding areas, in one of the biggest Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian soil in the 2 1/2-year war. A Russian regional governor says drones hit two multistory residential buildings and started fires in the town of Ramenskoye just outside Moscow. A woman was killed and three people were injured. He says five residential buildings were evacuated due to falling drone debris. The attack also prompted the authorities to temporarily shut down three airports just outside Moscow. A total of 48 flights were diverted.

Israeli Strike On Humanitarian Zone Kills At Least Forty

September 10, 2024 5:01 am

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian officials say an Israeli strike on a crowded tent camp housing Palestinians displaced by the war in Gaza has killed at least 40 people and wounded 60 others. Israel says it targeted “significant” Hamas militants and disputes the death toll. Gaza’s Civil Defense said it had recovered 40 bodies from the strike in an Israeli-designated humanitarian zone known as Muwasi and was still looking for people. It said entire families were killed as they huddled in tents. An Associated Press camera operator saw three large craters at the scene, where first responders and displaced people were sifting through the sand and rubble with garden tools and their bare hands by the light of mobile phones.

Pope Francis’ Mass Draws 600,000 People

September 10, 2024 5:00 am

TASITOLU, East Timor (AP) — The Vatican says some 600,000 people have attended Pope Francis’ Mass in East Timor, or nearly half the country’s population. It’s held Tuesday on the same field where St. John Paul II prayed in 1989 during the nation’s fight for independence from Indonesia. While other papal Masses have drawn millions of people in more populous countries and there were certainly other nationalities attending Tuesday’s Mass, the crowd in small East Timor is believed to represent the biggest turnout for a papal event ever, in terms of the proportion of the population.

All Eyes On Harris-Trump Debate

September 10, 2024 4:58 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tuesday’s presidential debate will give Americans perhaps their most detailed look at a campaign that’s been dramatically reshaped. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will meet for the first time face-to-face at 9 p.m. in Philadelphia. For both of them, it’s a high-pressure opportunity to showcase their starkly different visions for the country after a tumultuous campaign summer. Trump, a 78-year-old white man, has struggled to adapt to Harris, the first woman, Black person or person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. Harris, meanwhile, will face a rare round of sustained questioning. She has sat for only a single formal interview in six weeks since taking over the Democratic ticket.

Pennsylvania May Be The Key To The Election

September 10, 2024 4:55 am

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — When Donald Trump and Kamala Harris meet onstage in Philadelphia, they’ll both know there’s little debate that Pennsylvania is critical to their chances of winning the presidency. The most populous presidential swing state has sided with the winner of the past two elections, each time by just tens of thousands of votes. The stakes may be especially high for Harris because no Democrat has won the White House without Pennsylvania since 1948. The debate Tuesday night takes place before voting starts, in Pennsylvania and everywhere else. The debate is set for the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia

Payment To Begin City Garage Appraisal On Agenda

September 10, 2024 4:52 am

Washington City Council will contemplate a brief agenda on Thursday. The item of interest will be council’s consideration to approve a $1667 payment to Integra Realty Resources to begin its appraisal of the City’s parking garage. The Parking Authority rejected a county offer of $4 million dollars to purchase the garage. It is the feelings of the principal owners that they need to see another opinion before they decide to sell. In departmental reports, Park Director DeAnna Martin said that the pool had a successful season drawing 11,500 people. That is double what the pool drew in 2022 and outperformed last year when the pool drew approximately 8000 people. She said the second annual Arts in the Park event also did well. She estimated that approximately 500 people were in attendance, they gave out 186 free lunches to kids that participated. Martin also reminded everyone that Dark in the Park has moved dates. It is now October 18 and 19. She said she is still looking for volunteers to add a little more “excitement” to the event.

Local School Districts Victims Of Non-Credible Threats

September 10, 2024 2:26 am

Several school districts throughout Washington County have received – over the past few days – several threats that have been deemed “non-credible” by police.  Included in that list, was the Canon-McMillan, Trinity, Chartiers, and Burgettstown School Districts.  Emails were sent out to parents and guardians in the school districts notifying them that there would be an increased police presence at the schools Tuesday.  Canon-McMillan officials say they became aware of an internet post as students were walking into the building Tuesday morning,  After a sweep of the building,  they say police deemed that threat non-credible.  That was also the case in the three other school districts as well.  State Police had told WJPA on Monday that they were investigating what they called “an incident” that occurred over the weekend, after a video was supposedly uploaded to a social media sight, but then taken down, directing a threat to a Trinity area school.  Troopers said they would offer more information once their investigation was complete.  Authorities in each school district have said they are continuing to investigate each and every incident to ensure the safety of all students.

Norfolk Southern CEO Under Investigation

September 9, 2024 5:59 pm

(AP) – Norfolk Southern’s board has confirmed that the railroad’s CEO Alan Shaw is under investigation for potential ethical lapses. A spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based railroad declined to offer any additional details Monday about the nature of the allegations against Shaw, who has been CEO since May 2022. Shaw has been under tremendous pressure. First, he had to deal with the worst railroad disaster in the past decade after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023. Then this year, he had to fight to keep his job after activist investor Ancora Holdings tried to take control of the railroad and reform its operations, starting with firing Shaw.  (Photo:  AP)
