What To Watch On Election Day

November 4, 2024 5:17 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Election Day is nearly upon us. In a matter of hours, the final votes in the 2024 presidential election will be cast. History will be made regardless of who wins. America will either elect its first woman president in Democrat Kamala Harris or its first person convicted of a felony in Republican Donald Trump. And in a deeply divided nation, the election is a true toss-up. We know that there are seven battleground states that will ultimately decide the outcome. But major questions loom about the timing of the results, the makeup of the electorate, the influx of misinformation — even the possibility of political violence.

Harris Contrasts Optimism With Trump Rhetoric

November 4, 2024 5:15 am

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — On the last Sunday before Election Day, Democrat Kamala Harris did not mention Donald Trump’s name. When she did tacitly acknowledge the former president, it was to urge voters to turn the page and not be fooled by his disparagement of the electoral system that he falsely claims is rigged against him. The vice president made the latest iteration of her closing arguments in Michigan. She began her day at the pulpit of a Black church in Detroit. She ended it with a rally at Michigan State University. Michigan is part of the Democrats’ so-called “blue wall” that offers Harris her smoothest potential path to an Electoral College majority.

Trump Talks About Reporters Being Shot

November 4, 2024 5:12 am

LITITZ, Pa. (AP) — On the final Sunday of a rollercoaster presidential contest, Republican nominee Donald Trump is asking voters in Pennsylvania again to make him leader of a “failed nation” while also unleashing a profane, conspiracy-laden rant asserting U.S. elections are not legitimate in the first place. Democratic nominee Kamala Harris countered from a Michigan church pulpit that God offers America a “divine plan strong enough to heal division,” and, without saying Trump’s name, declared that Tuesday’s election offers voters the chance to reject “chaos, fear and hate” in favor of a more unified country defined by “freedom, justice and compassion.” The starkly different tones from the former president and sitting vice president come less than 48 hours before Election Day polls open.

Boeing Machinists Holding Contract Vote

November 4, 2024 5:11 am

Unionized factory workers at Boeing are voting on Monday whether to accept a contract offer or to continue their strike. The walkout has lasted more than seven weeks, shut down production of most Boeing passenger planes and cut off a key source of cash for the company. A Seattle-based district of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers is recommending that its members approve the Boeing offer, which would raise pay rates by 38% over four years. Workers also would receive ratification and productivity bonuses. However, Boeing didn’t meet their demand to restore a pension plan that was frozen nearly a decade ago.

Quincy Jones Dies At 91

November 4, 2024 5:10 am

Quincy Jones has died at age 91. His publicist says he died Sunday night at his home in Los Angeles. Jones’ historic career ranged from producing Michael Jackson’s record-setting “Thriller” to prize-winning film and television scores and collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles. Jones rose from music school dropout to the very heights of show business, becoming one of the first Black executives to thrive in Hollywood. Over the past 60 years, it was hard to find someone in the music, television or movie industries who did not have some connection to Jones. He kept company with presidents and dignitaries, movie stars and musicians, philanthropists and business leaders.

Man Charged After Dog Found Living In Crate

November 4, 2024 5:07 am

BELLE VERNON, Pa. — (WPXI) – A man is facing multiple animal cruelty charges after police found a dog living in a crate filled with feces in a Belle Vernon home. Officers received a tip from in-home care providers that the animal was living in deplorable conditions inside a house on the 400 block of Main Street. A Humane Society Police Officer with the Angels of Mercy Animal Rescue said the dog’s owner was David Allen Richards, one of the people living at the house. The officer, who has covered over 200 other animal neglect and cruelty investigations in their career, said the dog was the thinnest living dog they recalled seeing. Court documents Richards told police the dog had been sick for around a month but he could not afford to take her to the vet. The dog’s name is Emmy. Her ribs, spine and hips were all readily visible and prominent. Court documents say her head was abnormally large and her nails were longer than appropriate. Her crate was almost completely covered with a blanket. The crate had two empty bowls and an excessive amount of feces inside. 9-year-old Emmy was surrendered to veterinarians.

NWS Warns Of Increased Fire Danger

November 4, 2024 5:03 am

PITTSBURGH — The National Weather Service warns there’s an increased fire risk in western Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon. The agency issued a Special Weather Statement on Sunday morning for part of northern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, including all of the Channel 11 viewing area, stating low relative humidity values due to “exceptionally dry weather” increases the risk for fire danger in the afternoon.  The relative humidity values are expected to drop into the upper 20 to low 30 percent range during peak heating hours in parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Additionally, easterly wind gusts of up to 20 mph are expected, which could drop the relative humidity values even more. The NWS urges people to use “enhanced caution” with open flames, as fires can spread easily in these weather conditions. Some reminders the NWS has to avoid a fire include properly discarding cigarettes, keeping vehicles off dry grass and avoiding power equipment that creates sparks. Nearly every county in southwestern Pennsylvania also remains under a Drought Watch. It is not required, but residents and businesses are encouraged to voluntarily conserve water by reducing nonessential water use while under the Drought Watch status.

Pyrex Plant Closing In Charleroi On Hold

November 4, 2024 2:20 am

HARRISBURG  – Attorney General Michelle Henry announced Monday that a federal district court has granted the Office of Attorney General’s motion for a temporary restraining order that will pause the shuttering of the Pyrex glass manufacturing plant in Washington County, pending further order of the court.  The federal court’s ruling prevents owner Anchor Hocking Holdings, and its private equity partner, Centre Lane Partners, from removing equipment and other materials from the Charleroi Plant in relocation efforts before the next scheduled hearing.  The court agreed with the Office of Attorney General, that at this stage in the case, “immediate and irreparable injury will result” from such actions, according to an order issued Thursday.   “The closure of this longtime manufacturing hub will have permanent impact on the Charleroi community and surrounding neighborhoods, which depend on the plant for employment that is vital to the local economy and prosperity of families living there,” Attorney General Henry said. “My office intervened in plans to close what is the only large-scale manufacturing operation in that area, and we are very pleased that the federal district court agreed with our position.”  A hearing on the motion for preliminary injunction is scheduled for Nov. 12th.  Owner/operators Anchor Hocking recently announced plans to close the Charleroi Pyrex Plant and move equipment to Anchor Hockings facilities in Lancaster, Ohio.  About 300 employees were expected to be impacted by the closure.  The Office of Attorney General’s Antitrust Section is litigating the matter.
