Justice Department Appeals Abortion Pill Ruling

April 10, 2023 6:46 am

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Justice Department is appealing a Texas court ruling that would halt approval of the most commonly used method of abortion in the U.S. In its appeal Monday, the Justice Department called the decision “extraordinary and unprecedented.” The request to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was filed just days after conflicting court rulings over the legality of the abortion medication mifepristone put in doubt access to the drug that has been widely available for more than 20 years. U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued his decision Friday but ruled it would not take effect for seven days. The Biden administration on Monday asked the New Orleans-based appellate court to extend the pause on the Texas order.

India In Line To Become Most Populated Country

April 10, 2023 6:45 am

MUMBAI, India (AP) — India will soon eclipse China to become the world’s most populous country, and its economy is among the fastest-growing. But the number of Indian women in the workforce, already among the 20 lowest in the world, has been shrinking for years. It’s not only a problem for individual women, but a growing challenge for India’s own economic ambitions if its estimated 670 million women are left behind as its population expands. The hope is that India’s fast-growing working-age population will propel the nation’s economic growth for years to come. Yet experts worry this could just as easily become a demographic liability if India fails to ensure its rising population, especially its women, are employed.

April 10, 2023 5:40 am

Democratic Sen. Bob Casey will seek a fourth term in office, bringing the power of incumbency and unmatched name recognition in Pennsylvania politics to his party’s defense of a seat in a critical presidential battleground state. The announcement by Casey, the longest-serving Democratic U.S. senator in Pennsylvania history, gives Democrats a boost ahead of a difficult 2024 Senate map. They must defend incumbents not only in red states – Montana, Ohio and West Virginia – but also in multiple swing states. Casey, who will turn 63 in a few days, is a key ally of labor unions and President Joe Biden. In Congress, Casey, a moderate Democrat, has backed all of Biden’s top priorities and forged a close relationship with the president.

Trial For Proud Boys Leader Coming To A Close

April 10, 2023 3:47 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — A jury will soon decide whether the onetime leader of the Proud Boys extremist group is guilty in one of the most serious cases brought in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Closing arguments could be as early as this week before jurors in Washington, D.C., decide whether to convict Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio and four lieutenants of seditious conspiracy. Defense attorneys have argued that there is no evidence of a plan for the Proud Boys to attack the Capitol on Jan. 6. The case is expected to go to the jury after almost three months of testimony, dozens of witnesses and countless legal fights.

Pentagon Concerned About Online Leaks

April 10, 2023 3:46 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says online leaks of scores of highly classified documents about the Ukraine war present a “very serious” risk to national security and senior leaders are quickly taking steps to mitigate the damage. In the days since Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin became aware of the leaks, he’s reached out to top allies, convened daily meetings to assess the damage and set up a group not only to assess the scope of the information lost but review who has access to those briefings. And as the public airing of the data sends shockwaves across the U.S. government, the White House says there are concerns there could be additional leaks.

Police say the boy’s mother legally purchased the gun. Her attorney has said the gun was secured on a top shelf in her closet and had a trigger lock.
