Investigation Into Fatal Police Shooting ‘Active & Ongoing’

April 4, 2023 2:05 am

State Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting in the city of Washington last night and troopers have told our news partners at WPXI that no weapon was found on Eduardo Hoover Jr. of Corapolis, who was shot and killed by police officers Sunday night. Troopers say the police chase began in Mt. Pleasant and after a nearly 18 mile pursuit, he rammed his vehicle into police cruisers twice and officers fired. The incident played out shortly after six o’clock in the eleven-hundred block of Jefferson Avenue, which was then closed for several hours.  According to state police, Hoover slowed down on Jefferson Avenue which allowed officers to get in front and behind his vehicle. He then stopped, put his truck in reverse and slammed into the front of a police car before driving forward and hitting a utility pole.  After hitting the pole, Hoover put his truck into reverse again and sped toward the responding officers, prompting them to shoot at Hoover inside the vehicle.  According to authorities, Hoover reportedly had an extensive criminal record dating back at least a decade and most recently had been charged with burglary and trespassing.  (Photo:  WPXI)

Man Involved In Peters SWAT Standoff Pleads Guilty

April 4, 2023 1:47 am

A man living in a Peters Township apartment who created an hours long SWAT standoff pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday. Brandon Osborne, 31 who currently claims to be homeless, pleaded guilty to felony strangulation and misdemeanor criminal mischief charges. The plea deal will see Osborne serve one year minus one day to two years minus two days in the Washington County Correctional Facility. Once released, he will serve six-months’ probation. In addition to his jail time, Osborne will pay $2000 restitution to the victim. Osborne’s victim contacted police about a domestic violence situation in November. The victim told police Osborne choked them and that firearms were in the apartment where they lived. That caused an hours long standoff with the SWAT team until police realized Osborne fled the scene before they arrived. After Osborne was sentenced he addressed the judge and apologized to the court and the victim in the courtroom for his actions that led to this event.  (Photo:  WPXI)

Teacher Shot By Six-Year-Old Files Lawsuit

April 3, 2023 4:31 am

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A first-grade Virginia teacher who was shot and seriously wounded by her 6-year-old student has filed a lawsuit seeking $40 million in damages from Newport News school officials. The lawsuit filed Monday accuses school administrators of gross negligence and ignoring multiple warnings that the boy had a gun and was in a “violent mood.” Abby Zwerner, a 25-year-old teacher at Richneck Elementary School, was shot on Jan. 6 as she sat in her classroom. She spent nearly two weeks in the hospital and required four surgeries. The Newport News School Board and its members didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit.

McDonald’s To Close Offices Ahead Of Layoffs

April 3, 2023 4:28 am

NEW YORK (AP) — A report says McDonald’s has closed its U.S. offices for a few days as the company prepares to inform corporate employees about layoffs. The Wall Street Journal cited an internal email from the Chicago-based fast-food giant saying U.S. staff and some corporate employees overseas should work from home while the company notifies people of their job status. McDonald’s did not immediately reply to emailed requests for comment. The report said McDonald’s would inform employees this week about staffing decisions that are part of a wide restructuring announced earlier. While a number of big U.S. companies have announced job cuts and U.S. applications for jobless benefits rose last week, layoffs are at historically low levels

Oil Prices Soar After Output Cuts

April 3, 2023 4:26 am

BANGKOK (AP) — Oil prices have soared more than 5% after Saudi Arabia and other major oil producers said they will cut production by 1.15 million barrels per day from May until the end of the year. Shares in Asia were mixed. The S&P 500 gained 1.4% Friday, rising 3.5% for the month, with tech stocks leading the way. Friday’s gains came after a report showed inflation slowed in February, though it was still high on a historical basis. A slowdown in inflation could give the Federal Reserve more leeway to take it easier on interest rates. But higher prices for gas and other fuels would add to upward pressure on prices.

Ukraine Offers Plan For Crimea Without Russia

April 2, 2023 8:20 am

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A top Ukrainian official has outlined a series of steps the government in Kyiv would take after the country reclaims control of Crimea from Russia. The secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, published the plan on Sunday. Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014, but most of the world does not recognize it as Russian territory. The Black Sea peninsula’s status will be a key feature in any negotiations on ending the current fighting. The Kremlin has demanded recognition of Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea and acknowledgement of other land gains during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Kyiv has ruled out any peace talks with Moscow until Russian troops leave all occupied territories, including Crimea.

Indictment Ends Decades Of Perceived Invincibility

April 2, 2023 8:19 am

NEW YORK (AP) — When Donald Trump steps before a judge on Tuesday to be arraigned in a New York courtroom, it will not only mark the first time a former U.S. president has faced criminal charges. It will also represent a reckoning for a man long nicknamed “Teflon Don,” who until now has managed to skirt serious legal jeopardy despite 40 years of legal scrutiny. The spectacle that is sure to unfold will mark an unprecedented moment in American history. But on a personal level, the indictment pierces the cloak of invincibility that seemed to follow Trump through his decades in business and in politics, as he faced allegations of fraud, collusion and sexual misconduct.
