May 20, 2025 4:59 am

Voters across Pennsylvania went to the polls Tuesday for the Primary Election.  Polls opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 8 p.m.  There were countywide races for Controller, Recorder of Deeds, and Sheriff. There were also four magisterial district judge races.  Locally, there were municipal and school board races.  Statewide races for Superior Court and Commonwealth Court Judge were also on the ballot.  Washington County Elections Director Melanie Ostrander told WJPA that because it was an off-year election, she expected a very low voter turnout, just about twenty-percent.

More Severe Weather Pummels Central US

May 20, 2025 5:01 am

LONDON, Ky. (AP) — Another round of tornadoes has struck the central U.S. after four days of tornadoes, thunderstorms and heavy rain killed more than two dozen people. At least four tornadoes were confirmed in Oklahoma and Nebraska on Monday evening, thousands lost power in several states and homes were destroyed. The National Weather Service says the region can expect even more dangerous weather. Worst hit is Kentucky, where residents around the city of London were trying to clean up three days after a storm arrived near midnight. London’s airport is a beehive of activity as people pick up water, food, diapers and other supplies.

Trump Can Strip Legal Protections From Venezuelans

May 19, 2025 5:03 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing the Trump administration to strip legal protections from 350,000 Venezuelans, potentially exposing them to deportation. The court’s order Monday, with only one noted dissent, puts on hold a ruling from a federal judge in San Francisco that kept in place Temporary Protected Status for the Venezuelans that would have otherwise expired last month. The status allows people already in the United States to live and work legally because their native countries are deemed unsafe for return due to natural disaster or civil strife.

Trump Implores Divided GOP To Pass Tax Cuts Bill

May 20, 2025 5:05 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has implored House Republicans on Capitol Hill to drop their fights over his big tax cuts bill. He spoke privately for at least an hour trying to unite House Republicans on the multitrillion-dollar package that is at risk of collapsing before planned votes this week. Trump was upbeat afterward, saying there was “unity.” But negotiations are slogging along. It’s not at all clear the package, with its sweeping tax breaks and cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and green energy programs, has the support needed. With all Democrats opposed, the Republicans can handle only a few defections from their slim House majority.

New Trump Vaccine Policy Directed At COVID Shots

May 20, 2025 4:45 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials will no longer routinely approve annual COVID-19 shots for younger adults and children who are healthy. Companies that want to market their vaccines to those Americans will need to conduct large, new studies, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday. It’s a major shift in FDA’s approach to updating vaccines that protect against the virus. It comes as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his appointees continue to scrutinize the use of vaccines for a number of diseases. The FDA said Tuesday annual COVID shots will still be regularly approved for seniors and younger people with increased health risks from the virus.

“Person Of Interest” Now Charged With Homicide

May 20, 2025 2:50 am

(WPXI) – A man who was considered a person of interest in the murder of a Rostraver woman has now been charged with her death. Dorian Jeri-Greene is facing several charges, including criminal homicide, robbery and burglary. On April 11, Jennah Siebert, 24, was found shot to death inside her home on Lenity School Road. After being identified as a person of interest a few days after Siebert’s death, Jeri-Greene was taken into custody in Tampa, Florida, last week on unrelated charges. Jeri-Greene was charged in a home invasion and robbery in Washington County two months before Siebert’s murder. According to court documents, Jeri-Greene is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home by destroying a door frame, then strangling her before running out of the home with a hatchet.

The Gaza Health Ministry says two strikes in northern Gaza hit a family home and a school-turned-shelter, killing at least 22 people, more than half of them women and children. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the strikes.
