A spokesperson says Dr. Anthony Fauci spent time in the hospital with a case of West Nile virus and is now recovering at home. He is expected to make a full recovery. The virus is commonly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. CBS News’ chief medical correspondent, Dr. Jonathan LaPook, says in a social media post that he spoke with Fauci by phone Saturday, and that Fauci spent about a week in the hospital after likely being infected from a mosquito bite that he got in his backyard. As chief White House medical adviser, Fauci was the public face of the government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NASA says it won’t use Boeing’s Starliner capsule to bring two stranded astronauts back to Earth. Saturday’s decision is another black eye to Boeing’s reputation and another setback for the company’s troubled defense and space business. Boeing is better known for building passenger airplanes. But lately it has been getting even more revenue from its defense and space division. That business is struggling, however, because of losses from fixed-price government contracts like the one Boeing got from NASA for Starliner. The company is on the hook for delays and cost overruns in the space capsule program.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The European Union’s top diplomat says that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has “not provided the necessary public evidence” to prove he was the winner of July’s elections. Josep Borrell, the high representative of the EU, made the comments in a statement on Saturday. It comes days after the country’s Supreme Court backed the government’s disputed claims of victory. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Colombian President Gustavo Petro also said in a joint statement that the “credibility of the electoral process can only be restored through the transparent publication of disaggregated and verifiable data.” The two leaders also warned against repression as the Venezuelan government has jailed thousands and met protests with violence.

TORONTO (AP) — A workers union and Canada’s two major freight railroads wrapped up a nine-hour arbitration hearing with the Canada Industrial Relations Board. But there was no decision Friday on whether the board would order one of the railroads back to work following a potentially devastating stoppage. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference filed a 72-hour strike notice Friday morning against Canadian National, while the trains continue to run. Workers at Canadian Pacific Kansas City went on strike on Thursday. The government forced the companies and the union into arbitration. The union plans to challenge the arbitration order and questions whether the industrial relations board has the authority to order them back to work. But the Teamsters said they would follow the board’s order.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Fires have broken on a Greek-flagged oil tanker previously attacked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels this week. The vessel now appears to be adrift in the Red Sea. It wasn’t immediately clear what had happened to the Sounion. The oil tanker had been abandoned by its crew on Thursday and reportedly anchored in place. The rebels are suspected to have gone back and attacked at least one other vessel that later sank as part of their monthslong campaign against shipping in the Red Sea. But the Houthis made no immediate comment. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported the fires in a note to mariners on Friday night.
