Canonsburg Man Dies After Crash In Venetia

VENETIA, Pa. – (WPXI)- A man died after a car crash in Venetia Wednesday. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said James Manolakas, 93, was involved in a crash on Froebe Road at around 9:30 p.m. Manolakas, from Canonsburg, was taken to St. Clair Hospital where he died almost an hour after the crash. There’s currently no word on what caused the crash.

Trinity Heightens Security After Potential Threat

Another threat involving the Trinity School District.  In a letter sent to parents and guardians Wednesday night, Superintendent Dr. Michael Lucas says the district received a Safe2Say message. A series of screenshots suggested that someone with a weapon may attempt to enter a school.  In one of the screenshots, an individual added the words “especially Trinity”.  Dr. Lucas says Trinity Police have determined that it is not a credible threat. In the letter, Dr. Lucas says as a precaution, there will be an increased presence of police officers, administrators and security in all of their buildings.  He also is advising student to not ‘re-share’ any alarming posts they may see online and to report anything concerning to an adult, police officer or school personnel. Trinity is also making guidance counselors available for any child that may feel anxious or overwhelmed.

First Mail Ballots Go Out To Voters

It might feel like the presidential election is still a long way off, but it’s not. Election Day on Nov. 5 is less than two months away, and major dates, events and political developments will make it fly by. The first mail ballots were sent to voters on Sept. 11, the day after the first presidential debate between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump. Early in-person voting will start as soon as Sept. 20 in some states.

Jon Bon Jovi Helps Talk Woman Down From Bridge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Jon Bon Jovi and a video production assistant have talked down a woman standing on the ledge of a pedestrian bridge in Nashville. Police say the encounter happened Tuesday on the Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge. The Tennessean reports that Bon Jovi was filming a music video on the bridge, which remained open to the public. Video of the encounter showed the assistant talking to the woman. Bon Jovi approached slowly, waved to her and joined in the conversation. Eventually the woman turned around to face the two, and they helped her over the railing to safety. Bon Jovi hugged her.

Harris & Trump Jockeying For Battleground States

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are each making a beeline for swing states that they hope to flip in their favor this year. Harris will hold rallies in Charlotte and Greensboro in North Carolina on Thursday, while Trump is heading to Tucson, Arizona. They’re each trying to expand their narrow paths to victory in a closely fought presidential campaign. The rallies come two days after their first, and perhaps only, debate in Philadelphia.

9/11 Anniversary Brings Biden, Harris & Trump Together

NEW YORK (AP) — Some 9/11 victims’ relatives have appealed to presidential candidates for accountability as the U.S. marks an anniversary laced with election-season politics. President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris stood together at ground zero Wednesday, hours after Trump and Harris had their first debate Tuesday night. If the officials put politics aside, some victims’ loved ones delivered their own political messages. Biden and Harris later laid wreaths at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania and the Pentagon, and Trump separately laid wreaths at the Flight 93 memorial. Nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked planes crashed at ground zero, the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania site on Sept. 11, 2001.

Francine Weakens Moving Inland

MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) — Francine has weakened to a tropical storm after slamming into Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane, causing widespread power outages and sending a dangerous storm surge rushing into coastal communities. The National Hurricane Center predicted the sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season will weaken further on Thursday to a tropical depression as it moves northward across Mississippi. Francine made landfall Wednesday evening with 100 mph winds, knocking out power to more than 275,000 customers in Louisiana and dumping heavy rains around the state, including in New Orleans. Heavy rains and possible flash floods are in the forecast for Mississippi as well as parts of Alabama, Georgia and west Tennessee.

School Threats Continue Across The Region

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Roughly a dozen schools across the region have received threats this week. Wednesday, nearly 10 districts shared information about threats and protocol moving forward. Some of the threats resulted in lockdowns, remote learning instead of in-person classes and evacuations. At this time, all of the impacted districts are operating as normal on Thursday. Some students will see increased police presence as investigations continue.  FBI Pittsburgh reminded residents on Wednesday afternoon that issuing a threat promoting violence is against the law. Wednesday night, Shaler Township police said an elementary school student admitted to making a threat that circulated rapidly on social media and included multiple districts. The FBI says they are aware of the threats and remain in close coordination with police. In a statement they said “The FBI is aware of recent threats directed toward multiple school districts across Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. We remain in close coordination with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance where appropriate. That includes gathering intelligence, sharing information, tracking down leads, and working with partners to identify and mitigate threats quickly and effectively.

 

9/11 Memorial Service Held In South Strabane

Firefighters and police in South Strabane Township once again sponsored a memorial to those lives lost when Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four airplanes and crashed them into the Twin Towers of New York City, The Pentagon and a vacant field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. Nearly 3000 people were killed in the attack, 343 firefighters and EMT’s and 71 police officers are included in those numbers.  Remarks were spoken by Pastor Gary Gibson, Chaplain of the Washington Health System. He reflected on the unity of our country after the attack and prayed that our divided nation today return to those days of unity. Pastor Robert Grewe, Chaplain of the South Strabane Fire Department, spoke on how important it is that adults remember the attack and pass down to the younger generations the importance of fighting terrorism. South Strabane Township Fire Chief Jordan Cramer spoke to honoring not only those lost on September 11, 2001, but also caring for those who suffer illnesses they developed as a result of working on the burn piles after the attack. He said we should make sure that we get those heroes the care that they deserve.

FBI Issues Statement On Multiple School Threats

(WPXI) – The FBI Pittsburgh has issued a statement after multiple schools across the region received threats this week. The bureau says they are aware of the threats and remain in close coordination with police to assist however possible. In the statement, the FBI reminds neighbors that issuing a threat of any kind can be a violation of state or federal law. Anyone found responsible for threats will be investigated. Threats were made at multiple local districts throughout the week, including Trinity, Canon McMillan and the Burgettstown school districts in Washington County, along with the Butler Area School District and Armstrong High School. In their statement, they said that the FBI Pittsburgh stands committed and ready to respond to any immediate threat involving any educational institution 24 hours a day. We encourage students, teachers, administrators, and parents to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities that could represent a threat to 911, to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, or online at tips.fbi.gov.”
