WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris plans to use a joint campaign appearance in the industrial city of Pittsburgh with President Joe Biden to say that U.S. Steel should remain domestically owned — coinciding with the White House’s earlier opposition to the company’s planned sale to Nippon Steel of Japan. The two are both attending Pittsburgh’s Labor Day parade on Monday. It will be the first time the two have shared a speaking slot on the political stage together since the surprising election shakeup. Harris coinciding with Biden is little surprise, but marks her taking a major policy position when her nascent campaign has offered relatively few of them.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Worries of being uprooted from their jobs have returned for Laura Dodson and other federal workers, who have long been the economic backbone of the nation’s capital and its suburbs. Some federal workers already have experienced efforts to move federal workers to other parts of the country during former President Donald Trump’s administration. Now, with Trump proposing the relocation of up to 100,000 federal jobs, concerns about being abruptly moved are again dogging federal workers. Dodson, who is president of American Federation of Government Employees local 3403, says it’s causing a lot of anxiety and discomfort within the federal workforce.

BERLIN (AP) — The Alternative for Germany party’s success in two state elections has piled new pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s fractious government and left the country’s main opposition party facing political contortions to find a way to govern a pair of eastern regions without involving the far right party. Alternative for Germany, or AfD, became the first far-right party to win a state election in post-World War II Germany in Thuringia on Sunday. In neighboring Saxony, it finished only just behind the mainstream conservative Christian Democratic Union, which leads the national opposition. Voters punished the three parties in Scholz’s governing coalition, which took well under 15% of the vote between them.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A rare call for a general strike in Israel to protest the failure to return hostages held in Gaza led to closures and other disruptions around the country, including at its main international airport. But Monday’s strike was ignored in some areas, reflecting deep political divisions. Hundreds of thousands of Israelis had poured into the streets late Sunday to vent grief and anger after six hostages were found dead in Gaza. The families and much of the public blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying they could have been returned alive in a cease-fire deal with Hamas. But others support Netanyahu’s strategy of maintaining relentless military pressure on Hamas, whose Oct. 7 attack into Israel triggered the war.

(AP) – Vice President Kamala Harris says former President Donald Trump “disrespected sacred ground” in his recent appearance at Arlington National Cemetery, where the Republican nominee took and distributed images despite a federal prohibition on campaign activity on the grounds. Harris on Saturday cited reports that Trump’s campaign aides created an altercation with a cemetery staffer and proceeded to take photographs and film the former president, including at the graves of Afghanistan war veterans, after being warned about rules at the site. Harris described the actions as disrespectful and said in a social media statement that she would never politicize U.S. service members who die on the nation’s behalf. (Photo: AP)
