No Result In Canadian Railroad/Union Hearing

August 24, 2024 10:18 am

TORONTO (AP) — A workers union and Canada’s two major freight railroads wrapped up a nine-hour arbitration hearing with the Canada Industrial Relations Board. But there was no decision Friday on whether the board would order one of the railroads back to work following a potentially devastating stoppage. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference filed a 72-hour strike notice Friday morning against Canadian National, while the trains continue to run. Workers at Canadian Pacific Kansas City went on strike on Thursday. The government forced the companies and the union into arbitration. The union plans to challenge the arbitration order and questions whether the industrial relations board has the authority to order them back to work. But the Teamsters said they would follow the board’s order.

It was meant to mark the city’s 650th anniversary with several stages in central streets offering attractions such as live music, cabaret and acrobatics.

Fire Breaks Out On Greek Oil Tanker

August 24, 2024 10:09 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Fires have broken on a Greek-flagged oil tanker previously attacked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels this week. The vessel now appears to be adrift in the Red Sea. It wasn’t immediately clear what had happened to the Sounion. The oil tanker had been abandoned by its crew on Thursday and reportedly anchored in place. The rebels are suspected to have gone back and attacked at least one other vessel that later sank as part of their monthslong campaign against shipping in the Red Sea. But the Houthis made no immediate comment. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported the fires in a note to mariners on Friday night.

Jury Sides With Teacher Over January 6 Capitol Riot

August 23, 2024 3:39 pm

(AP) – A federal jury says a Pennsylvania school district violated a teacher’s constitutional rights by falsely suggesting he took part in the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Jurors found the Allentown School District retaliated against Jason Moorehead when it suspended him after the deadly insurrection in Washington. Moorehead attended Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally but says he never got closer than a mile to the Capitol. Jurors decided the school district should pay Moorehead $125,000 for economic damages. The jury also found two school board members acted “maliciously or wantonly” and ordered them to pay punitive damages.
