In California, weather officials said winter storms will continue moving into the state through Wednesday after residents got a brief break from severe weather.

SCOTUS Seems Likely To Reject Biden’s Student Loan Plan

February 28, 2023 4:13 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Conservative justices in the Supreme Court’s majority seem likely to sink President Joe Biden’s plan to wipe away or reduce student loans held by millions of Americans. Chief Justice John Roberts led his conservative colleagues Tuesday in questioning the administration’s authority to broadly cancel federal student loans because of the COVID-19 emergency. The plan has so far been blocked by Republican-appointed judges on lower courts. The Biden administration says 26 million people have applied and 16 million have been approved to have up to $20,000 in federal student loans forgiven. The program is estimated to cost $400 billion over 30 years.

Peters Twp Council Addresses Voting & Zoning

February 28, 2023 4:11 am

Peters Township Council put in some overtime on Monday night as they tackled a small but very detailed agenda. First off was a public hearing on how the township will go about making use of $3.7 million that will be awarded to the township by the United States Food and Drug Administration Task Force. Peters Township Detective Ed Walker was vital in the elimination of an entrepreneur that set up businesses that marketed steroids and kratom claiming them to have medical benefits. Those claims are illegal if not supported by the FDA and therefore Walker’s efforts brought down a large illegal shipping and processing plant. Walker was awarded a distinguished achievement award thanking him for his efforts. Among the agencies having funds donated to them from Peters Township will be the South Hills Area Council of Governments Cooperative Police Program and the Washington County District Attorney’s office. District Attorney Jason Walsh thanked the township for its generous offer of picking up the licensing fees for the phone extraction programs used in detective investigations. (pictured)  In other township business, council adopted a new voting district map that slightly altered voting district boundaries. The Washington County Elections Board will approve the map and alert township residents of any changes in their district or voting precinct. Finally, council scheduled a public hearing for June 5 to consider changes in the Conservation Residential Overlay Zoning District. Council is looking to tighten up rules in the ordinance to better fit the vision council had when the district was approved approximately 10 years ago.

The grief, spread among the tight knit town as the community has already come together for a fundraiser garnering $11,000 for the family. “It’s just outrageous the support with the inclement weather they still come out,” Assistant Fire Chief of North Belle Vernon Todd Reppert said. A Washington County man accused of child rape and other felonies has been sentenced to forty-two and a half to eighty-five-years in prison.  Thirty-year-old Logan Hunt of South Strabane Township was convicted on all nine charges against him back in November.  Hunt was charged with multiple felonies, including rape of a child, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault of a child, aggravated assault, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children. He also faced misdemeanors for indecent assault and simple assault.  Police said that Hunt had been living at the Rodeway Inn since December 2020, and often babysat the child.  They said that in June, the child’s father noticed bruising on her face and chin and took her to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.  According to the complaint, hospital staff found that the child had a broken arm, and determined the injuries were consistent with abuse.  According to court documents, the child said Hunt would hit her in the face and that the suspect had raped her on more than one occasion.  As a result of his conviction, Hunt will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Survey: Economists Push Back Recession Forecasts

February 27, 2023 4:17 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – A majority of the nation’s business economists expect a U.S. recession to begin later this year than they had previously forecast, after a series of reports have pointed to a surprisingly resilient economy despite steadily higher interest rates. Fifty-eight percent of 48 economists who responded to a survey by the National Association for Business Economics envision a recession sometime this year, the same proportion who said so in the NABE’s survey in December. But only a quarter think a recession will have begun by the end of March, just half the proportion who had thought so in December.

DeSantis Moves Toward GOP Presidential Bid

February 27, 2023 4:15 am

NEW YORK (AP) – Ron DeSantis has emerged as a political star early in the 2024 presidential election season even as he ignores many conventions of modern politics. The Florida governor often avoids gatherings of fellow Republican governors and party leaders. He is the only top-tier presidential prospect yet to court voters in Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina. And he is often at odds with the press. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Florida governor will manage his presidential aspirations in his own way and on his own timeline. DeSantis has quietly begun to expand his political coalition on his terms just as he releases a book, “The Courage to be Free,” which comes out Tuesday.
