January 17, 2024 5:06 am

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A shipment of medicine for dozens of hostages held by Hamas is en route to Gaza. France and Qatar arranged the delivery by brokering the first agreement between Israel and the militant group since a weeklong cease-fire in November. Qatar says the deal also includes the delivery of additional medicine and humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the besieged coastal enclave. The war in Gaza shows no sign of ending and has sparked tensions across the Middle East, with a dizzying array of strikes and counterstrikes in recent days from northern Iraq to the Red Sea and from southern Lebanon to Pakistan.

North Strabane Considers Personal Warehouses

January 17, 2024 5:00 am

North Strabane Township Supervisors held a public hearing prior to their regularly scheduled agenda meeting Tuesday night. Under consideration was a conditional use application filed by CC Realty Advisors for a plan for personal warehouses. The development would be located at the corner of Morganza and Curry Roads. Its concept is along the lines of traditional storage units but for much more active uses. The development is for five buildings and 58 units that range in size from 750 square feet to 2800 square feet and stretch 20 to 25 feet high. Eighty percent of the units would have plumbing, sewage and HVAC installed. Rich Erenberg is the Owner of CC Realty Advisors and he says that uses could be for small business office space, hobby interests like working on project autos and storage and display of exotic cars and any other hobby interests. The units would be governed as condominiums that would have to adhere to certain criteria. They could be purchased and become an asset to a business or individual, or they could be leased. The meeting was continued to allow developers time to gather information that supervisors wished to have before making a final decision. No new meeting date has been set. In other township business, supervisors will look to approve the hire of a part time police officer and a code enforcement officer. They will also look to appoint a member to the Planning Commission. The voting meeting will be January 23.

“Snow Drought” Broken With Cold & Snowy Conditions

January 16, 2024 5:42 pm

(AP) – Major cities on the U.S. East Coast have broken a snow drought of sorts. Meanwhile, other parts of the country are struggling Tuesday with perilously low temperatures that closed schools, cut power and likely contributed to cold exposure deaths. New York City’s Central Park recorded at least an inch of snow for the first time since 2022. The National Weather Service says Philadelphia snapped a similar 715-day streak. More than 90,000 U.S. homes and businesses are without power, most of them in Oregon, Texas and Louisiana, after widespread weekend outages. In Washington, a friendly snowball fight broke out on the National Mall. The group even has a name: the Washington DC Snowball Fight Association.  (Photo:  AP)

Jury Seated In Trump Defamation Trial

January 16, 2024 5:41 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump left his defamation trial before a lawyer for a New York columnist told jurors in an opening statement that he used “the world’s biggest microphone” five years ago to destroy her reputation after she said he sexually abused her. But before leaving, he showed his displeasure Tuesday with the courts and the current trial in particular. The jury must decide what, if anything, Trump owes columnist E. Jean Carroll. Trump, sitting at the defense table, shook his head in disgust as the judge told prospective jurors that another jury had already decided that the former president had sexually abused Carroll in a luxury department store.

Trump, DeSantis and Haley each have New Hampshire stops scheduled for Tuesday. Trump supporters were already gathering in frigid winter conditions hours ahead of his expected arrival.

Federal Judge Blocks JetBlue’s Purchase Of Spirit Airlines

January 16, 2024 5:23 pm

DALLAS (AP) — A federal judge has sided with the Biden administration and blocked JetBlue Airways from buying Spirit Airlines. U.S. District Judge William Young said the $3.8 billion deal would reduce competition. The Justice Department sued to block the merger, saying it would drive up fares by eliminating Spirit, the nation’s biggest low-cost airline. JetBlue argued that the deal would help consumers by making JetBlue a stronger competitor against bigger rivals that dominate the U.S. air-travel market. Young presided over a non-jury trial last year and said in the ruling Tuesday that the government had proven that the merger would substantially lessen competition.

Iran Strikes Targets In Norther Iraq & Syria

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — Iran says it fired missiles at what it claimed were Israeli “spy headquarters” near the U.S. Consulate in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, and at targets linked to the extremist group Islamic State in northern Syria. Four civilians were killed and six injured late Monday after missiles hit an upscale area near the consulate in Irbil, the seat of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region. The strikes come at a time of heightened tensions in the region and fears of a wider spillover of the ongoing war in Gaza. The U.S. State Department condemned the strikes as “reckless.”
