(AP) – Tom Smothers, half of the Smothers Brothers and the co-host of one of the most socially conscious and groundbreaking television shows in the history of the medium, has died at 86. The National Comedy Center, on behalf of his family, said in a statement Wednesday that Smothers died Tuesday following a cancer battle. “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” debuted on CBS in the fall of 1967 with a mix of music and comedy that included satirical sketches lampooning the Establishment and railing against the Vietnam War. The show, though popular with viewers, drew the ire of network censors who constantly battled the brothers over its content. In 1970, CBS abruptly canceled the show. (Photo: AP)

(WPXI) – A man is facing charges after police say he fired shots into a bar in Monongahela early Saturday morning. According to Pennsylvania State Police, Jonathan Toth, 49, of Jefferson Hills, was at Main Street Tavern at around 12:30 a.m. when he and his wife got into an argument with other bar patrons. Toth threatened the other patrons and he and his wife left, saying he was going to get a knife and “gut everybody.” He returned with a .22 caliber rifle a short time later, shot once into the rear window of a 2023 Dodge Ram and then shot four times into the occupied bar through the rear door. State police said the shots hit the walls inside the bar while around eight people were inside. According to state police, Toth got into his car and started to leave when a Monongahela police officer approached on foot. The officer gave Toth multiple verbal commands which were ignored. The officer fired one round at Toth, which hit him on the right side of his body, state police said. Toth fled the scene, which caused a short vehicle pursuit with police. He eventually stopped on state Route 136 in Forward Township, where he was removed from his car and provided medical care, state police said. Toth is still in the hospital, according to the state police. Toth is facing dozens of charges, including multiple counts of criminal attempted homicide, recklessly endangering another person, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm and discharge of a weapon into an occupied structure.

(WPXI) – A man from Washington County was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at Pittsburgh International Airport after he tried to bring a loaded gun onto his flight. TSA said the man, from McMurray, tried to bring a .380 caliber handgun loaded with six bullets in his carry-on bags. “Our TSA officers work on holidays so that others may travel to visit family and friends,” said TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport, Karen Keys-Turner. “Their continued vigilance to ensure that people can get to their destinations safely is demonstrated daily and Christmas day was no exception when they prevented a traveler from bringing a loaded handgun onto a flight. It’s absolutely unforgivable to bring a firearm to a security checkpoint. Responsible gun owners do not bring their guns to a checkpoint because they know the proper way to pack a firearm for a flight. This individual carelessly introduced an unnecessary risk into the airport environment and as a result he will face a stiff Federal financial penalty that will likely cost him thousands of dollars.” The total number of guns caught at the airport’s checkpoints is up to forty-four so far this year, nine more than the previous record of 35 firearms caught in 2019.

(AP) – Americans are expected to spend nearly $30 billion on gift cards this holiday, according to the National Retail Federation. Most will be redeemed. But many gift cards wind up forgotten or unused. In a July survey, Bankrate found that 47% of U.S. adults had at least one unused gift card worth an average of $187. That’s a total of $23 billion in unspent money. Under federal law, gift cards can’t expire for five years after they’re purchased. But experts say it’s wise to use them sooner than that, since inflation and inactivity fees can eat away at their value.

LONDON (AP) — Britain is one of the world’s oldest democracies, but some worry that essential rights and freedoms are under threat. They point to restrictions on protest imposed by the Conservative government that have seen environmental activists jailed for peaceful but disruptive actions. The government says it is stopping extremist activists from hurting the economy and disrupting daily life. Critics say it is an example of how Britons’ civil rights are being eroded with too little scrutiny from the country’s elected representatives and not enough protection from the courts. Some say Britain’s unwritten constitution does not offer enough protection from politicians who push the limits of what is allowed.
