Air Traffic Controllers For Newark Airport Lose Radar Again

May 9, 2025 4:51 pm

The air traffic controllers directing planes into the Newark, New Jersey, airport lost their radar Friday morning for the second time in two weeks. The Federal Aviation Administration said the radar at the facility in Philadelphia that directs planes in and out of Newark airport went black for 90 seconds at 3:55 a.m. Friday. That’s similar to what happened on April 28. That first radar outage led to hundreds of flights being cancelled or delayed at the Newark airport in the past two weeks after the FAA slowed down traffic at the airport to ensure safety. U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer blamed the problems on the lack of proper air traffic controller staffing and modern technology.

China’s Exports To US Sink, Offset By Trade With Others

May 9, 2025 5:03 am

China’s exports to the United States have tumbled while its trade with other economies surged in April. Data released Friday showed China’s total exports rose 8% last month from a year earlier, much faster than most economists had been expecting. Exports to the U.S. sank 21% as President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese exports rose to as high as 145%. But China’s total exports remained resilient, with exports to Latin America, India and Southeast Asia expanding at a double-digit pace in the first four months of the year. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other senior trade officials are due to meet with Chinese officials in Geneva for talks this weekend.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV will celebrate his first Mass after his historic election as the first North American pope. He will meet on Friday with the cardinals who chose him to lead the Catholic Church and follow in Pope Francis’ reform-minded footsteps. Leo, the Chicago-born Augustinian missionary Robert Prevost, surprised the world on Thursday when he emerged on the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, since there had long been a taboo against a pope from the United States. He spoke to the crowd in Italian and Spanish, but not English, and honored Pope Francis for his final salute to the crowd on Easter Sunday.

MOSCOW (AP) — A military parade has begun on Red Square in Moscow, marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. President Vladimir Putin and a host of foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, attended the parade. Victory Day is celebrated in Russia on May 9, the country’s most important secular holiday. The Red Square parade and other ceremonies underline Moscow’s efforts to project its power and cement the alliances it has forged while seeking a counterbalance to the West amid the 3-year-old war in Ukraine. The festivities were overshadowed by reports of Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Moscow, disrupting service at the capital’s airports.

The crowd in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers, priests made the sign of the cross and nuns wept as the crowd shouted “Viva il papa!” after the white smoke wafted into the sky.

Trump Keeps 10% Tariffs On UK But Cuts British Taxes

May 8, 2025 2:32 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has agreed to cut tariffs on British autos, steel and aluminum in a planned trade deal. But the Republican on Thursday played down the possibility of other nations receiving similarly favorable terms on his import taxes, which are roiling the global economy. The announcement provides a political victory for U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and a degree of validation for Trump’s claims his turbulent approach on trade may be able to rebalance the global economy on his preferred terms. Terms of the deal have yet to be completed so it can be signed. Trump says the agreement would lead to more beef and ethanol exports to the U.K.
